2001 ford focus fan only works on high and the air conditioner only seems to work in first 3 postions but the fan does not blow in the first 3 postions. All of this with the air on.

Air does not work on high.

    I'm sorry for misunderstanding,Cherry !
All the above was correct in opposite situation:fan doesn't blow in high position but works well in 1,2,3. In you case series resistor is responsible and I fixed it by its replacement (my problem was a combination of two: High(4) position failed first, then 1,2,3 have gone)Access is very simple-behind glove compartment on the wall at pass. feet area.
    Good luck

I've just fixed same problem by replacement of the switch you talking about. You need just remove radio first and switch panel to access the switch. To remove radio insert some 2 watch screwdrivers of 2 mm diameter in 2 holes on right side , press them to the middle and pull right side out. Repeat it for left side. The switch costed me $58 at deeler.
Good luck.

Sounds like you need a new rear stat. About £10 in the UK.

My 2001 Ford Focus' heater/air dial has stopped working. The heater will only turn on "4" and the air conditioner will not come on. What is the problem?

Sounds like a burned resistor for your fan speed. 2- 8mm screws removes resistor check to insure coils are not broke.

Ford 2002 focus blower motor only works on switch

You may have 2 separate problems, check the bower motor resistor first, if it's bad replace it and THEN you should have the fan blowing on the lower settings.

If the ac turns on after you fix this then problem solved, if not it may be unrelated have a pro look at the ac.

Engine?

not sure what the sound was, but if there's a blown head gasket, the water that gets in a cylinder won't compress and it won't turn over very well and sometimes not at all. that may be what they mean by "holding compression".

check for water in the oil...it'll foam up on the dipstick,

Get a second opinion from a reputable shop other than Ford.... If it's a head gasket, it's much cheaper than an engine swap, if that's what you're thinking...
