Question about 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

1 Answer

My exterior temperature gauge is messing up. Some days it shows the correct temp and other times it goes to a negative temperature, when it's hot outside. when it goes to the negative temperature, the a/c does not work - only the fan. It's the middle of summer. What should I do?

Temp Light Comes On And Temp Gauge Drops To Cold. Then Go Back To Normal. Not Over Heating

Possible defective temperature sensor or wiring issue. Check to see if the heat coming out of the vents stays at a constant temperature when this problem is happening. If it goes from hot to warm/cold when the temp guage is messing up, you may have a head gasket isssue developiing

Temperature gauge goes up down

that is a strange one , i think the problem is with the exterior temp sender as the fan cutting in and temp gauge falling is what you'd expect ,try diconnecting the exterior temp gauge ,may be a fuse for it ,if that is all ok i'd get the ECU checked as may be getting a short let me know how it goes

The temperature gauge goes up when car starts to HOT like its out of calibration. the engine is not overheating

check that the wire to the temp sender unit has not fallen off and is shorting out on the head/block. The power comes from the ignition switch through the gauge down to the sender unit and because the sender is a temperature controlled resistance unit the voltage is very low and so the gauge reads cold . as the temperature heats up , the resistance is decreased and so the voltage is increased though the gauge and the needle reads higher.. Hench if the gauge goes directly to hot on start up the wire is shorting out or the sender unit is faulty.

The temp gauge shows hot at all times even when the car is first started

Either your temperature sender is shorted or the wire from the sender is bare and touching ground somewhere. Disconnect the wire and see if the temperature goes to cold. If it does, replace the sender. If it does not, follow the wire and find the short.

The thermostat may be wearing out. A thermostat controls the engine temperature to keep it at a consistent temperature, The other fan will probably turn on if you turn on your Air Conditioner.

Temperature gauge

Well let's see....You did not say the temp of the heat changed inside your car... if it does NOT ...I say the gauge is messed up....

A thermostat usually sticks open or closed.. if it is broke.

If it is defective the car will start getting hotter under a load going uphill or....when the a/c is running it will not put out cool air while sitting still at a stoplight or heavy traffic..
