Question about 2000 GMC Jimmy

We have a 2000 gmc jimmy sle, 4wd, with the 4.3 vortec engine. This morning it would not start, you would turn the key and and the power would fail. I checked the battery, by attaching my battery charger, and the gauge on the charger reads full in the 2 and 6 amp setting. At first with the ignition key turned to accesory, the quages started to "dance" as I heard a clicking noise coming from under the dash board. Now there is no power and I cannot turn the key to off and remove it from the ignition. What do you think is the problem? Bruce

    Right now our 2000 GMC Jimmy is sitting dead in a supermarket parking lot. My husband turned off the vehicle and left the key in the ignition. I decided to start the car from the passenger seat and there was no power. The battery is only 8 months old, and it was running perfectly before we parked. It is in the parked gear, but the steering wheel still moves. Can you give me a solution?

    Worked great, cleaned the inside with the doors open for about and hour, know it will not start, but it turns over, tried charging battery and a new battery. Could it be the fuel pump?

Clean the two way fuse underneath the battery. I had the same problem with mine. Lost power while driving, couldn't get an electrical connection while the key was stuck in ignition. After cleaning the fuse it ran beautifully.

I'm having problems with a cold start issue myself turns over but won't fire in the morning..when I get home it fires right up repeatedly.
to get your key back out..look under the column by the key switch..there is a small plastic plug, pry it out gently..then insert like a large paperclip or something similar..you can then get the ign lock to turn and release the key.
check your battery cables take them off and make sure there is no corrosion, clean with a lil baking soda in a water to netrualize the acid. anti corrosion washers may help and are cheap.
I had a bad contact there trick me into thinking my alternator was bad before and give me a bad reading on a handheld voltmeter..you should see 14 volts on a handheld voltmeter running if charging correctly..somehwere close to 12 volts off if battery is good.-good luck-Ralph

That a dead battery if our meter read full 6 amp is nothing they have 120 amp alternator try to boots it it should start move with our hand the cable sometime the therminal almost broken if not disconnect the therminal lock for corosion boots it let me know hope it fixya our post thanks pierre

Filter could be clogged. Try changing it.

I have a 4WD 1998 GMC Jimmy 4.3L Vortec V6 and it started running hot then it shut off and wouldn't start back up... do you think there would be any way to fix without replacing the whole engine


IS THEIR WATER IN THE OIL? CHECK THE PLUGS TO SEE IF THEIR WET.YOU MIGHT PUT SOME PLUGS IN IT IF WET TO SEE IF IT WILL RUN.THEN PUT SOME HEADGASKETS ON IT.BUT IN REALITY NEW MOTOR WOULD BE BEST.

Hi there. I just did a tune up on my 95 Jimmy with the same motor. The firing order is 1-6-5-4-3-2 and the distributor rotation is clockwise. I hope this helps.

Won't shift into 4 wheel drive mode at all / 2000 GMC Jimmy SLT


I have had the same problem with my 2000 jimmy. Disconnect the battery for approx 1 minute and then reconnect, this should reset the computer. It has worked for me every time. I was told it was a glitch with GMC.
