A 96 is OBDII, you can not pull codes with out a code reader.
Up until roughly 94 on some models it was possible to jump 2 pins on the diagnostic port. The check engine light would then blink the codes.
You can buy a relatively inexpensive code reader or about $50.

Go to an Autozone, Checker, Shucks, Kragen, O'Reilly, or a NAPA auto parts store and ask them to use their code reader to find out what the trouble codes are causing your check engine light to come on. They will do this for no charge. Report back here once you know what the codes are.
I am sorry,on that model you need a code reader. You buy one at the auto parts store, cost about average,67.00 dollars. It comes with a code book also.If I can help any further, let me know.
..without more details and punctuation.. Likely so, jumping surges are a hazard. ..if have a friend with a obd reader, may be able to read a fault code related
You can't jump the connector to get codes on OBD II. (Pre 1996) Try hooking back up you code reader. If it doesn't communicate, check the fuse for the cig lighter. This fuse should also power up the diagnostic plug.
Find the data link connector, w/ a paper clip, u have to jump terminals A and B, then turn key to on position, count check engine light for flashes. Count flashes to determine trouble codes. To see diagram of link connector w/ A and B terminal locations to jump, and list of codes, go to www.troublecodes.net/GM/
