Question about 1998 Volvo V70
Thanks again Ginko.
What are the risks associated with leaving well enough alone and ignoring the ABS light?
Your car had been designed to work with ABS brakes, if ABS is not working brakes performance can be badly affected, particularly at high speed.
To keep the vehicle safety to standards the ABS should be inspected. At a qualified garage they can connect to ABS system, get an error code in return and diagnose the problem.
Check relays first.

Your brake system will work just fine with out the ABS. If you live somewhere where it snows a lot I would have it inspected/repaired. The only time ABS is activated is when one wheel is starting to turn slower that the others when braking and the wheel may lock up. It monitors for lock up all the time. If it is not working it stops monitoring for lock up. Other that that it has NO effect on braking. 35 years as a master tech.
