SOURCE: oil leak coming from around water pump?

Oil travels when it leaks, the most common cause is the cam chain tensioner to the right side of the engine at about the same level as the water pump. You have to remove the bracket holding the power steering pump to gain access. A new seal is required there. Be careful not to undo the entire tensioner, this is spring loaded. Just remove the 13 mm bolt from the centre.

SOURCE: oil leak

Northstar engine, that's about right. They do take about 8 quarts.
The most common place they leak at is at the oil filter housing that attaches to the block of the engine.

Oil leak 2000 alero, just replaced plug, not it, leaked out all the oil after I drove it 20 miles, please help, could it be a gasket or what

Check the oil filter. The old gasket might be stuck on the engine (two gaskets stuck together), or the new gasket might be defective, misaligned or missing.

2006 Pacifica 3.5L I have a small coolant leak on the passenger side. The coolant will trickle down and drip from oil pan. The puddle is only 2 inches wide. I did a pressure test at 17PSI and I lost 2PSI...

It is a possibility that the leak may come from bad seals from the water pump or a bad water pump. If you also observe bubble in the coolant inside the radiator when the car is running or water coming out of the exhaust you may have a bad head gasket. The coolant comes out of the bad part of the head gasket near the outside which lets water outside the engine as well.

Just had head gasket done escort van 55 still burning oil

Hello, there are many reasons for an engine to burn oil. Replacing a head gasket will stop leaks in the head, but it is not a cure all. You can have bad compression, bad oil rings, and valve guides that are worn. A new head gasket can fix compression leaks between cylinders and oil and antifreeze leaks.

Overall bad compression means both the oil rings and power rings are worn out. You can have bad oil rings and still run reasonable well if the power rings are okay. The valve guides are the small seals on the stems and with an overhead cam they are in the heart of the engine. Sometimes when the valley of an engine is plugged up, the oil can not return to the crankcase fast enough. The pooling oil is more apt to lay by the valve stem seals and be drawn into the combustion chamber.

Also check the PCV valve which may snorkel up oil into the induction system. Another sign of bad rings is blowby on the vent pipe.

Loses oil pressure after warming up and coming to idle lite go out after rpms pick back up

Have you checked the engine dipstick to ensure that the oil level is correct? A very low oil level will cause the light to come on. Top up oil if necessary. If oil level is OK, then it is possible that the warning light pressure switch which is screwed into the engine oil pressure system is faulty and setting off light and needs replacing. There could even be oil leaking out of the switch. The switch is usually located near the oil filter and will have a wire connected to it.
If the oil constantly needs topping up you either have a bad leak or the piston rings are worn and not operating correctly. If the leak is bad, then there will be oil puddles under the engine after it has been stopped for a while. If it is a ring problem, then there will be grey oil smoke out of the exhaust while driving.
Worst case is that it could also mean badly worn engine bearings. It is unlikely to be the oil pump as these hardly ever fail.

If the engine has not been serviced regularly with oil and filter changes, the oil can become very black, dirty and sludgy and cause restrictions in the lubrication system such as sludge blocking the gauze on the inlet to the oil pump and build up in the oil galleries. Poor oil flow from the pump will cause low oil pressure and continuing to run vehicle in this state will drastically shorten engine life.
If this is the case, then run some flushing oil product (ie. Wynns or Nulon or other reputable brand) in the engine, following the instructions on the container, and then drain and refill oil and change oil filter. You may have to repeat this process in a couple of months if the oil is particularly dirty.

Oil pump problem on 97 540i

No, if the oil pump went bad the engine wouldn't get lubricated at all, then it would sieze.

That's like saying I'm bleeding, my heart must be bad. Not so, no heartbeat, no blood pressure.

It's good news for the oil pump that it's burning oil, at least, the pump is moving oil around the engine for it to be burned.

Bad valves or piston rings will burn oil. Most likely piston rings
