Question about Nissan Altima

95 Altima, start, runs well until you put it in gear, automatic, step on thegas and it goes blaaaah and dies.Easiest way to restart is hold gas pedal to floor. No check engine lite on. With trans engaged,as soon as rpm drops below 2300,engine dies, shift into neutral and engine revs freely aand idles ok,back into gear feather the pedal to get above 2300rpm. What to do?

I had the injectors cleaned and tested and a fuel pressure test done which I was told was good. The nissan dealer worked on it for three hours and could find no probkem in engine management. If you unplug the MAF the stalling goes away but replacing the MAF doesn't solve the stalling

I took the Car to a trans shop and they drove it and hooked it to the computer and saw no trans problems. Finally had ccheck engine lite come on and showed no trans codes but knock sensor and EGR control solenoid. Perhaps more important ignition timing would flucuate widely, idle well at 15-20BTDC,in or out of gear, but then drop to 3-5-7,sometimes catching itself and going back to 15-20, if not the engine would die. Is this related to the above codes or a differnt fault.

The answer by Junooo007 is total bull. Does anyone have a serious answer to why the ignition timing is swinging so wildly. For some periods of time the timing stays constant and then goes into erratic mode.

When you step on gas petal, engine idle faster ,transmission does not engage, just rpm go up ,and transmission not doing anything, transmission rebuilt, still the same

Unfortunately it is the transmission, more or less the EGR control solenoid as you have said gives the error code. Basically the engine(rpm) and transmission gears dont match so the engine cuts off. You will need to replace the solenoid and reset the error code. If you are having problems getting the solenoid you may need to purchase the transmossion full kit for your vehiecle, in this case just rebuild the transmission.

HI.. I read all the comments.
And is MISSING the more important.

If the dealer work on your car.
IF the fuel pressure is tested and is good.
The injector in good condition. ETC>>>>>

Let me ask you , You have REPLACED the DISTRIBUTOR.
IF NOT. why?
The Distributor on Nissan Altima and Frontier. Come damaged
Very easy.
NIssan Are good cars. But on my experience I have changed.
Distributor more than other parts.
The distributor, give all the sintoms that you are talking.
Check the condittion of the connector.

The Knock sensor .
Come dameged result of Engine overheated , or running to hot.
But Dont't give a idle problem and missfiring.

OK.. I hope this can be good step to try resolve your problem.

THANK's

I know this sounds crazy but remove the air filter,I have seen this before,it may be clogged and the air/fuel mixture is off.

Sir,

If the CEL isnt on, then it's not throwin the codes anymore, right? My vote is that ECU gremlins threw the random codes. Perform an exorcism on the car immediately.

thanks
good luck

There's a sensor on the transmission that correlates with ECM and adjusts the timing and fuel when the transmission is engaged and putting a load on the engine. If this sensor goes out or is going out it will cause this problem. The throttle positioning sensor can also cause a similar problem when malfunctioning.

A faulty knock sensor can cause your problem. It senses when the timing is off and ajusts it in order to keep the engine from pinging or knocking. If it's malfunctioning it could over compensate throwing the timing way out.

Probably it is a problem with fuel (injection) and ECU based gear control. It does not sync gears with engine rpm.

Basically engine dies because automatic transmission does not engage the right gear.
It can be the torque converter lock or some some electronic problem.
The best thing to do is to take the car to a garage and have it fixed.

My car will start and idle fine sometime and sometime it dies and dies when put in gear

Engine stalls cold or RPM fluctuates at idle up and down or dies near idle.

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve but always run a OBD2 fault code as well as the cleaning procedure. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control. If the above cleaning doesn't cure your issues you need to have the computer controlled automatic idle speed control system diagnosed and repaired by a dealer or electronic engine control repair shop.

Hi. I have a 99 nissan altima. My problem is with it dying in gear. Forward or reverse. It runs a little rough at idle (about 500 r.p.m) you can rev it up to 3-4000 no problem, as long as it is in neutral...

Check the throttle positioning sensor and the transmission, it sound loke the sensor is givving bad information to the computer whis is cutting the engine when in gear, this might cause the transmission to break its syncro plate if it slamms in and out of gear.

94 nissan altima 2.4 runs well until it reaches normal temp, then dies, ( no spark @ coil/dist). once it cools, it starts and runs fine.

maybe your fuel injector is clogged-up so try filling up 8 oz. of fuel injector cleaner 1st and let your car run for few minutes to eliminate all the carbon that builds -up inside fuel lines to the exhaust. also try testing your battery maybe dead already. use a tester then start the engine measure it. set your meter to 15 VDCor above as long as more than 12vdc for security. put he red needle to red positive of hte battery and vice versa black needle of the meter to your negative of your battery. the reading must be appx 12. 4 vdc + And then try accelerating by stepping on your gas pedal to around 2- 3000 rpm (3 x 1000) on your dash gauge. the reading must be around appx 13.8vdc or 14.2 vdc. therefore your battery is good if you see thsese results. also try distributor cap replace ,spark plugs mostly before sparkplug cables then ignition coil.

I have a1999 Nissan maxima and it dies everytime I step on thegas

It sounds like it is fuel related, expecially since I didn't hear any codes mention. A fuel presure check would be a good place to start. The filter could be clogged, but if this goes on too long it just taxes the fuel pump too much than it gets weak...hope this helps.
