1994 jeep laredo , in-line 6cyl,temp gauge goes to 245 ,uphill ..replaced thermostat and heat coolant sensor ..no change ..dont know where to go next ???

I have a 02 Grand caravan that has new radiator, termostat, one new fan. the temp gauge goes up to max hot the drops right back down in seconds. what could be the problem?


it could be you have an air lock in the cooling system
remove the rad cap from the rad, start the engine and let it run until the coolant drops (add to fill it back up) or until the coolant boils out of the rad spout.

maybe pull the heat sensor. -replace it OR clean it off, reinstall it.

How does iac work on a jeep 1996


If you have not done so pull the engine codes or have someone do it.
The codes will give you a good idea where to start otherwise the first place I would check is replacing the Crankshaft Position sensor. This is not only very common for them to fail but I have 1994 Laredo and 1996 Laredo and both had the same trouble at exactly the same time. In addition I replaced the Intake Air Temp sensor, coolant temp sensor and idle air control valve on the 1994.

Sounds like a faulty temp guage/r a strange malfuntion in a sensor to me as well, only doing it when it going up hill really makes no sense for the way the cooling system works so I doubt that its actually running hot, which is likely why he asked about the gurgling noise, it would force water back into the resivoir if it was running hot assuming that the thermostatic radiator cap is working properly.

I have a 1997 jeep grand cherokee laredo 6 cyl. i was driving and noticed the battery gauge said the battery was dead and then i noticed the check gauges light went on. i pulled over and saw my temp gauge...


well check the coolant level. it sounds like you had a vapor lock and that would cause steam to escape and cause connections to get wet. this may have cause your battery to read dead. if you aren't low on coolant then i would start with the thermostat. that is easy to change and cheap. if you have low coolant then you may have vapor lock. to fix that you need to let the engine cool down and if you have a radiator cap remove it. look inside you should see coolant. if you don't fill up the radiator with coolant. with the cap off start the jeep and turn the heater on. let the engine warm up. watch the temp gauge and keep looking in the radiator. if you don't see coolant keep add it. at times it will bubble and burp this is normal. keep checking the temp gauge. now see if you feel heat coming out of the heater. if your feeling good heat then the system is circulating. (this mean your not in vapor lock anymore) let it keep running and keep adding coolant till it is full in the radiator. once full put the cap back on and fill the coolant tank to the full point. keep running it but keep checking the temp to be on the safe side. if the temp stay steady you should be good. hope this helps. please rate.

Does the coolant reservoir to overflow tank need to be full for 1996 jeep grand cherokee 6cyl 4.0l gas vin s laredo if it is empty will it cause radiator to over heat.


It should have the level maintained in it as marked on it. If it is empty it will not cause over heating (it just holds the extra fluid) but a leak causing a low coolant level, stuck thermostat, clogged radiator, bad cap or improper pressure will.

I have a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo that the top hose that leads from the radiator to the thermostat blew the other day. I replaced the hose with no problems but the gauge in the jeep keeps indicating...


The sensor would not likely have shorted, but the sensing material may have changed due to overheating. The thermostat may also be in trouble. Replace both, then take the car to Autozone or similar business for a free computer scan, which can remove any error codes. Then drive the car to see if it resets further codes. Make sure the cooling system is topped up in both the radiator and the overflow tank. Check your other hoses for condition and replace if necessary. If the entire engine overheated, be on the lookout for antifreeze leaks around the heads and for strange misfire codes. It may have warped the heads from excess heat. Hope this helps!

Have you checked the coolant temp sensor. They also have something called a MAP(manifold absolute pressure) sensor that could be causing this issue. This sensor will have a 4 pin connector and 1 vacuum line going to it. Should be on the firewall, just behind the engine.

93 jeep wrangler 6 cyl. my temp gauge never shows full temp. only goes to about 130 degrees. I have a 195 oem thermostat but still gauge does not climb above 130,...bad gauge, wiring???


Assuming the t-stat is good, I'd look at the wiring next. Make sure the connector is clipped onto the water temp sensor/back of the gauge and that the wiring is not chaffed, etc. If that all looks good, replace the coolant temp sensor...they're $20 or so. If it still does it, the gauge is bad.

Over heating


In general I know of no reason per se to replace the thermostat and temp sensor because you replaced the radiator fan. If the temp gauge seems to be staying in the 1/3-2/3 of full scale, and there is no apparent engine control issues as the engine warms from cold to operating temperature then there is no obvious reason to replace those items. Other than fan motor failure is there any reason for you to believe these other parts are at fault?You can get a free fault code readout at an Autozone parts store which would highlight a temp sensor problem, but there is no fault code for the thermostat except maybe the one for engine running cold for too long a time after start up. You could also check the resistance of the temp sensor which should run around 10-14,000 ohms when cold and drop to 700-1,000 ohms when warmed up.
I don't know about the issue of replacing the thermostat because I don't know which engine you are working with. So let me know an
