I have the same problem with the instrument panel with my 2002 Monte Carlo.  While driving the instrument cluster goes to zero (goes dead) and battery warning light comes on and then instruments recover just as if the car just started and engine never misses a beat.  This is a frustrating and disturbing experience especially at 70 mph on the interstate.  What is going on?

You have a weak alternator it needs replaced .... unless it has an external regulator then that could just be shorted out

My sons1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee had the gauges light on and would not start like battery was dead. Had it jump started and it started. When he put in park it stalled jumped again and worked.

Sounds like a charging system problem and the alternator may not be working. The gauge light will come on if the charging gauge is showing low so you will look at the gauges. Have the battery and charging system tested

My ford f150 has a new battery and starts fine all day untill it sits all night then its dead

Someone will need to pull the fuses and disconnect the major electrical components until you find the power drain. You use a meter or test light to watch the battery voltage. It could be anything from a stuck relay, to a short in the wiring.

Battery problems

Well, something is on if the battery is dead. Pull the interior light fuse, and the clock fuse, disconnect the negative battery cable and put a 12 volt test light between the battery terminal and the cable...Likely it will light. Then pull fuses one at a time and observe if the light goes out. Keep disconnecting until you get the light to go out. Do not rule out the new alternator, stuff happens.

2004 ford taurus. turn the key to the on position all gauges and lights work. try to start and every thing goes completely dead for several minutes. its like something resets and the lights and gauges will...

Start at battery and check and clean all connections. Check ends for corrosion, or weak points, as well as remove and clean all ground cables. That's where I'd start.

I have a 2000 Mercury Cougar and the gauge inside tells me that the engine is over heating, no heat is coming from the heater when I turn it on, the fan for the engine is running at full blast, the engine...

Hi,

The overheating and lack of cabin heat both point to a failed engine thermostat which would be stuck closed. At the warm up stage, the coolant stays in the engine block to bring the engine to efficient operating temperature, then it opens and circulates the coolant through the radiator and heat core. If the thermostat is stuck closed, the engine will overheat, and coolant will never reach the heater core, and you will not get cabin heat.

Blinking oil light at idle which goes away during driving could be a low oil level, but may also be a drop in oil pressue. You could have a clogged oil fliter (at best) pickup tube, or a failing oil pump.

Your alternator may be on it's last leg. Start the car and while the car is running, remove the negative cable from the battery. If the car dies, the alternator is no longer working. If you have a volt meter, put the meter on the battery positive and negative. You should read 13.8 - 14.2. If it doesn't show this, and reads under that, your alternator is not charging enough to keep your accessories going.

The battery goes dead in the cold on my 2004 dodge ram 2500

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially and not knowing if the battery is new, possibilities are:
  • one or more cells of the battery is weak, would therefore require replacement (most likely);
  • one or more of the diodes in the alternator has an electrical leak, and therefore would require check, repair or replacement (just a possibility).
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Instrument panel dials all pegged to zero or max

ok let me help you get started
this isnt going to be easy we need to do a bunch of testing.
you will need a 12 volt test light.
remove the negitive battery cable and connect one side of your test light to the battery negitive and the other side to the battery cable . and with the key off.. so now if you have a short some where the light should be lit. now what we have to do is start to pull fuses untill the light goes out. and when you find the fuse that is causing your short and drain your battery . then we have to look into the section of the wiring and components.
let me know what you find
later paul
