Question about Dodge Dakota

Open Question

1995 dodge dakota 3.9 v 6 alternator charges in test, but it will not charge when installed. Check engine light came on at the same time as it quit charging. I have replaced the computer and it still will not charge. Please help. Larry at lwalter5@columbus.rr.com

have you checked the power booster and the master cylinder> what about the wheel cylinders> have you looked at them to see if theres a leak somewhere?

there are grounds that join behind batter remove battery check for corossion clean up and rejoin splice should work again

Test the alternator. The battery light is for the charging system. Once the charging system is working with the engine running, the light should go off. If your light stays on with engine running, the alternator may need service or replacement.

To test the charging system, just put a voltmeter on the battery with engine running. The voltmeter should register at least 13.5 volts- alternator is charging. If you only show battery voltage with engine running, like 12.2-12.8 volts, the alternator or charging system is not working. The battery light should be on to signify this.

How to fix voltage regulator


The regulator is inside the alternator. Get a new alternator or disassemble the alternator and install a new one. My option is get another alternator.

Why does my 1995 dodge dakota stall when i turn the head lights on


It sounds like the alternator does not have the battery charged and when you turn on the headlights it pulls the battery down to the point that the battery cannot run the lights and the ignition. Check the alternator.

95 Dodge Dakota 3.9 , voltage regulator is over chargeing battery.


Hate to say it, but probably a faulty PCM.
The regulator is directly controlled by the PCM on most models.
You might try a used PCM to make sure, or exchange the rebuilt under warranty.

I own a 97 dodge dakota sport v8 magnum with a 318 its having problems holding a charge , i've replaced the alternator the belt and the battery , still won't hold a charge to the alternator


1997 DODGE DAKOTA CHARGING SYSTEM
OPERATION:
The amount of amperage produced by the alternator is controlled by the Electronic Voltage Regulator (EVR) circuitry within the Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
EVR circuitry is connected in series with the alternator field driver terminal and ground. A Battery Temperature Sensor (BTS), located in the battey tray under the battery, is used to sense battery temperature.
Sensed battery temperature and data from monitored line voltage is used by the PCM to adjust the battery charging rate. This is accomplished by cycling the ground path to control the strenght of the alternator magnetic field.
The PCM then compensates and regulates alternator amperage output accordingly.
If a problem is sensed in a monitored circuit, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be stored in PCM memory and the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) (commonly refered to as the "check engine light") will be illuminated, providing certain criteria have been met.
DTCs can be read using Chrysler's Diagnostic Readout Box (DRB-III) or a generic scan tool.
When diagnosing any problem concerning the charging system on this vehicle, it is recommended that you begin by scanning the PCM for fault codes in order to eliminate certain possibilities and provide a more accurate and timely diagnosis.

My dodge dakota will not idle and the battery keeps going dead


The problem with a lot of dodges is that the computer will loose the idle memory when battery power is lost, to regain the idle just hold the gas pedal a little to keep engine running for about 2-3 min then release the pedal and it will idle on its own, if the battery goes dead it will loose idle again.



As far as the battery going dead you will need to check a few things, first have the battery tested a bad battery that doesnt hold a charge can test good and still be bad due to it can not hold a charge. the battery is charged and if it tests good try this, unhook one battery terminal over night or for as long as it takes to drain normally. if the battery goes dead unhooked then the battery is your problem.

At the same time the battery is tested have the alternator tested. Make sure its tested good. what i mean is tested at idle with all acc on, like lights heater, rear defoger and etc.

Dodge Dakota charging issues


You put pulleys on to increase power , but slowed down the alternator. Theres your sign. At idle speed the alternator isnt spinning fast enough to charge. So you can put original pulley back on, or a smaller alternator pulley.

you should have both your battery and alternator checked. many parts stores can do this for free while everything is still in vehicle. the battery may have a bad cell and only gives you enough to start once. the alternator may not be producing enough power to charge the battery and run your lights(the flickering). if you cant drive to the parts store some can still test alternator out of vehicle. call and ask

Dodge Dakota Battery still wont charge


I was running into this problem with my 97 5.2l Dakota and after some searching I found the the "Fuse Link" between the Alternator and the Battery was blow. Found a suitable "Fuse Link" at a local Auto parts store for about $5.

Check the battery for a defective cell.. You should replace the battery
to check
remove all the top up caps from the battery
start the vehicle and look for fumes rising from the cell

also check the electrolyte in the battery making sure alll the cells are covered.

the alternator is charging.
to test this start the vehicle and remove the positive battery pole, the car should remaing running, if it cuts off your alternator isnt charging,
