I suggest you go to a mechanic that knows what they're doing. You could have a gasket that needs to be replaced. I have a 2000 grand am and the water pump went. I went back to my mechanic three times because my car was still overheating and leaking. They finally figured out I needed a gasket replaced. I also had the timing chain replaced because my car was shaking they found that the piece that holds the timing chain was broke so they had to replace that too. My car doen't shake anymore. Maybe something is busted that controls your timing chain. Hope all this info helps.

You might not like this but you need a fuel pump. my car did the same thing, now it runs great! take it and get the fuel pressure checked to find out....

Im having a problem getting the oil pan off my 96 2.2L pontiac sunfire to put a new oil pump in it. there is alot of stuff in the way. is there any way around that?

Because of the oil pump pick-up tube extending near the bottom of the oil pan it is often necessary to loosen the motor mounts and raise the engine to get enough clearance to pull the oil pan.

If I remember correctly, that is a chain driven water pump. You'll have to take the timing cover off and remove the timing chain to get to the pump. I've done the timing on a Quad4 engine before and I think I would rater set fire to the car than to do that again.

likely you have a blown head gasket or crack in head. Though common, this condition does not always show up in engine oil. To verify, have a shop do a hydrocarbon test on radiator.

Loses power at 45mph

Don't buy it. I had the same problem with a 96 grand am. never figured it out it was just one big head ache. Then 6 weeks later the tranny ended up going. They had many problems with the earlier models grand ams my advice is look somewhere else for a car.

1996 Pontiac Grand Am overheating

If its the 3.1L it could be your intake manifold gasket , the material used for the gasket does not react well with GM's Dex-Cool antifreeze. The leak may not be apparent at first, but I would pressure test the cooling system. If you look at the front of the motor by the belts , try to peek down at the intake manifold and check for slight seapage to an obvious leak.

If its either of the Quad-4's they were notorious for heads warping or cracking.

1996 grand prix se running hot

it sounds like it may have air in the system there should be a bleeder valve for the coolant also if it ran hot you may have a possible head gaskt problem i would try bleeding the air out of the coolant system and if problem is still there you can buy a kit to check the head gasket it hooks to the coolant system and you pour a liquid in it and if it turns from blue to yellow it has a head gasket problem
