Question about 1998 Mitsubishi Montero Sport

1 Answer

Engine keeps dying after I turn it on.

I took my montero sport on a short vacation to Mexico in the Sea of Cortez. I had no problems. However I left my lights on overnight and the battery was dead in the morning, I charged it for most of the day and it started up. However, driving home I started having problems with the car dying everytime I came to a stop and I braked. The idle would be up and then suddenly drop and the engine would die. I would start it up and had to keep my foot on the gas petal to keep it from dropping again and dying on me. Do you know why it is doing this? Thanks,
Danny

I also have that same problem... i have since replaced the battery and alternator along with the fuel and air filter. i have no check engine light on and now when i turn the car on it idles fine for a period of 5 minutes or so and then begins to rev up and down before shutting off.

i had a similar problem but with a different vehicle.

It was a 99 Toyota Camry with nearly 300,000 miles on it.

And like you everytime i would stop at a light or stop sign the idle would rise and then suddenly drop.

A temporary solution that would fix it would be to simply put the car in to neutral and one foot the the brake and step on the gas and keep the car's rpm at 2000-2200.

I took to a shop and they replaced the starter.

Since then i never had that problem.

But before you off and replace the starter. I would reccomend that you take your car to a autozone and ask them to check your battery and alternator.

There is no charge for those services so there is problems there.

I had the same problem when I did battery maintenance on my 1988 Montero Sport. The problem was explained to me, that the car's electronic pollution control computer data was erased when the battery is disconnected or the battery totally discharges. The car's computer uses this data to regulate idle speed and other engine factors. The solution given to me was to recheck the battery connections (make sure they are clean, and tighten down), start the vehicle, and just let it sit and idle for about 15 - 20 minutes (without racing the engine or driving the vehicle). This will rebuild and repopulate the car's computer engine data it needs to make adjustments. Hope this helps.
Mark.

2001 mitsubishi montero sport has been very sluggish when you put the ac on. ac still works fine but when you stop it sometime kills the engine. Any help to solve this problem. Thank you

Two things come to mind. The A/C system is overcharged cause the compressor to work hard and this will drag down the engine. The other is the compressor is getting ready to die. Again this will drag down the engine. If you can reach the compressor, with the engine off turn the front of the compressor ,not the pulley. It should turn freely, with no drag. and as you keep turn you will feel a pulse this is pressure building in it, this is normal. The freon pressure has to be checked with pressure gauges.

The Cat code could have cleared itself if the computer doesn't detect a problem anymore. Fix the EGR problem as it is still active.

Chnage fuel filter 2001 montero sport

I just changed mine yesterday. It was pretty easy to find the directions on the internet. The only problem i had was finding the fuel pump relay. It is located on the floor board area of the passenger side, behind a plastic cover, near where your right foot would be. It is a 4 wired plug next to another 4 wired plug. It is the one on the left. Atleast it was for me. The other one is for your diagnostic or something. if you turn your key after removing the plug and your check engine light doesnt come on, then you removed the wrong one. If you turn the car on and it dies shortly after, then you pulled the right one.

Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2003 3.0 needs head gaskets and valves replaced. How many of each are needed? And what type of valves are needed?

This I believe is a SOHC (12 valve) engine. If in fact new valves are required I would purchase rebuilt heads and use yours for cores (each head will cost @ $250) I have done this job on my 1990 montero over a weekend. Just get the right parts, keep it clean, take your time and be patient.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom

if your car keeps cutting out is because you might have a loose connection to the battery. if your vehicle is running and it looses connection with battery it should still stay running. if it dies it means that you have a bad altenator.
