I found it easier to replace the drive axil assembly, rather than just the boot. Far faster and cleaner, and about $150 per axil plus labor. Can be difficult if you have not done it before.

Front boots are leaking

They make a puller that removes the CV joint from the axle the c-clip gets stuck making it difficult to remove. I have this tool and it works about 60% of the time . instead of wasting your time replace the axle shaft.

Clicking sound when in 4WD

Of coarse

Anytime a CV Boot tears the dirt & water off the
road ruins the joint & you have to replace the axle,
thus the clicking.

Cv joint and boots

Hi Wendy Ann,
Hard to give an exact diagnosis when I can not hear the noise myself. Generally, a bad CV joint will make a clicking sound when you turn a corner. From what you describe, it sounds like you've been ignoring the problem for some time. Due to the mileage on your car, I would recommend that you change both front half axle assemblies. [There are two CV joints/boots on each half axle] This is a common problem on front wheel drive cars.

Cv joint but the plastic thang that go around it

One would have to remove the half shaft to service the cv joint properly.

I was told to replace the cv boots or joints. i want to repair it my self. how to?

First, call around for replacement boot prices, and compare that to replacement axle prices (rebuilts are available). Usually, it is only a few dollars more for a new or rebuilt axle assembly then for a new boot. The operation for replacement is the same for either, so I would go with the axle. Then, find a friend with automotive lift equipment. It is much more difficult to replace when on jackstands than when on an actual lift. Make sure you have the manual with you. Or, just pay someone the labor$; it may be worth it!

How to change cv boot

Most times when the boot fails, before it is noticed, you already have enough dirt in the joint to cause damage. You can get complete reconditioned axles fairly cheap and just change it as a unit.(or, get one from a scrapyard) The job is not too difficult but too long to write here. inexpensive manuals like chiltons and haynes give decent instructions and photos. Get one when you buy the axle...the manual will be useful for lots of other repairs later so it pays to have one!
Good luck

I have a 91 Subaru loyale 4dr sedan. 1.8Engine. I am told that the right CV joint and boot needs replaced. I am having a hard time finding the part and any repair info on it to see if I can do this...

If you get a clicking noise then the joint in the axle is damaged and will require replacement of the axle. The benefit is ease of replacement and they come with new c.v. boots on the inner and outer joint. Replacing the boot and repacking the joint in grease will not eliminate the noise.

Just curious how difficult it is to replace the axles myself. I just did the brakes and noticed the outer CV boots are torn

Replacing axles isn't that difficult, get a good repair manual,I prefer Haynes over Chilton's, may have the procedure for free, but if the axles are still in good condition you can get quick replace boots and save yourself a good amount of money and time.

94 Geo Prizm CV or driveaxle?

on this type of vehichle, you have two axles in the front; one going to each side. Chances are that the boot at the axle joint was torn and that is why you are having problem. In teh past people used to replace the boot, this day and age its actually cheaper to replace the axle. So you would need to replace that side of the axle (the half shaft).
