Main seal Hi all, I am new here, I need to know where the main seal is on my Malibu, the oil light kept coming on at 500 RPM, when I hit the gas at 1000 RPM the light goes out, check the oil level 20 minutes after car is parked let the oil settle, got an oil change, they reported that the main seal had a severe leak. 1. will main seal additive help with a temporary "fix?" 2. how difficult is the replacement of the seal 3. where in the engine is this seal Thank You, Patricia **97 malibu 2.4liter twin cam******** 130K on it

First is it a front seal ,or rear main seal,(front seal, being were you see the pulleys and fan belts,,you have to look at the bottom pulley, follow the shaft to the motor, where the shaft goes into the motor is the front seal, the pulley and everthing behind it has to come out then you pull out the seal, auto zone actually has free tool rental that you can pull the seal, and a tool to put it back in,if a rear main seal its where the shaft from the transmission meets the back of the motor, youll have to pull the trannsmission back, check where you see the oil leek from, the front seal you can do if mechanically inclined, but if its the rear you should take to a mechanic,if this helps please give me a fix ya vote

In your engine you have two main seals one is at the front of the engine where all of your pulleys are and the other is at the rear where the transmission is bolted if it is your rear seal than you have o remove the tranny which is a fairly large job but if it is the front sealthat is leaking than you only have to take the harmonick balancer off of the crankshaft with a three jaw puller and pop the seal out and put the new one in with a little oil on the rubber for lubrication

My rpm drops to 500 when in idle mode after its warmed up and then oil light comes on

500 rpm when not in gear seems a bit low but not ridiculous. Oil light comes on when oil pressure is too low. Is your oil very old, do you fail to change it ever. Or your idle speed just isn't high enough to maintain pressure. You may need a new oil pump.

05 malibu leaking oil from rear of engine

This may be from excessive pressure in the sump from blow-by from the compression process . It is from a blocked PCV valve that is not equalising that pressure. I have also known oil leaks to happen because the rear main bearing cap is leaking oil past the join around the bolts (loose) or no sealing compound used in assembling the rear main bearing.. I would look at the PCV valve as it is the cheapest test first.. Check that the oil is not coming from the front gear box seal or torque converter seal.

My check engine light in on. I have a 1998 chevrolet Malibu. It has been skipping and I thought that water was in gas. I have now put Lucas in gas tank.

It sounds like you may have a bad spark plug or bad spark plug wire. The first thing you need to do is find out what diagnostic trouble code is in the computer and to save money autozone will scan it for free. Send me a message and tell me what came up in the computer and we can go from there. Good luck.

Oil Pressure Light Comes On after 10 min of Driving

You may not have put the right amount of oil in your car, your oil pressure sensor could be faulty, or you may have a leak.

By revving your engine, you're increasing the pressure and thus turning off the light and making the sensor think that it's at the correct pressure.
