The timing chain tensioners are located with the timing chain inside the timing cover and usually are not changed unless the timing chain assembly is replaced. Why would you change them?
If it is running loose for a long time and is worn then should be replaced as soon as But if the tensioner has come loose which it shouldn't have then an inspection of the links will further tell you if it should be replaced. There are ways to inspect the timing chain. This is a rough guide.
Timing Chain and Sprockets Cleaning and Inspection
Clean the components with cleaning solvent.
Caution
Wear safety glasses in order to avoid eye damage.
Dry the components with compressed air.
Inspect the timing chain for binding or wear.
Inspect the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets for:
Worn teeth (1)
Damaged teeth (2)
Chipped teeth (3)
Worn valleys between the sprocket teeth
Inspect the crankshaft sprocket keyway for wear.
Inspect the crankshaft sprocket oil pump drive splines for wear.
Inspect the chain guide (232) for the following conditions:
Loose metal inserts (1)
Cracking (2) in the chain contact area
Excessive grooves (3) in the chain contact area Grooves 1 mm (0.040 in) or
less in depth are to be considered normal wear.
just replaced the timing chain 03 cavalier, cost of chain was u.s. dollars was $120.00 labor cost $320.00 but have my own shop as mobile mechanic which i come to you.this does not cover towing. their was no core charge on the timing chain.but the repair was very meticulas and complicated.i had to purchase a repair manual $20.00 for the cavalier V-6 model engine.i also had to remove the motor mounts on passenger side and other things to replace the timing chain[not belt] but chain. recommend you have done by someone that's a mechanic because it's complicated process.if i can assist you further, please ask,i will respond.thank you for choosing fixya.com!
If your car has a chain there is not a scheduled replacement. A timing chain should last as long as the engine. No need to replace the chain. Now things can happen such as a guide wearing out or a drive / driven gear wears out, then a chain should be replaced. You do not need to replace a chain under normal usage.
*** Now the 2000 - 2004 Escape with a 2.0L (4 cylinder) does have a BELT and yes, belts should be changed (Ford recommends) every 60,000 miles or 7 years which ever comes first.
This van has a timing chain, which should last for the life of the engine. The LS engines, which I'm guessing you have one of the 4.8,5.3,or 6.0L, use a high quality roller timing chain that is long-lasting, and won't give you issues. Also, having roller lifters, the camshaft puts less resistance on the timing chain, so the combination of a strong chain coupled with less resistance, makes for a reliable chain.
Sounds as if your ignition timing is off... Could be in need of adjustment, a vacuum advance line is off or broken to the distributor, or worse, your timing chain - belt has slipped a tooth...
With the book time not sure but your timeing chain is self adjusting so if it is that you would need to replace it. Not hard to do yourself, if you know how but if not don't try you maynot be able to start it again. I can tell you it would be a couple a hundred bucks for a mechenic to do for you, but if it brakes it will cost a lot more because it puts everything out and you need to start from scratch basically
