When fuel pumps start going out they tend to make a whining noise before startup and while idling, also you might have a lose of power at lower rpms

If the sending unit was connected and grounded, I would guess the gauge in the cluster is faulty.

2001 chev suburban 5.3 gas, engine dies after you start it up. It acts like it is starving on fuel. Could it be fuel pump, fuel filter or what?

try reving it after you start, if it still chokes or sputters your right. if not check your battery guage. i'd try changing your filter first because its the cheapest option. you might want to consider flushing lines too. worse case you'll need a fuel pump sending unit.

2001 cvevy suburban gas cap pressure does not release and blows out gas?

My first thought would be to replace the cap it being the cheapest part, but I had this same problem with a ford van and 2 weeks later the fuel pump went out. This is a sign of a faulty fuel pump

Fuel pump

Hook a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail under the hood. Fuel tank will have to be removed to replace the fuel pump.
