Question about 2003 Dodge Dakota Club Cab

1 Answer

Thermostat I have a 2003 dodge dakota sxt single cab. It has 96,000 miles on it and a week ago the temperature gauge showed it at a high temperature and the light came on. My boyfriend filled it with antifreeze and changed the thermostat but it seems when I drive it any distance over 20 miles I notice that the temperature runs high again. I hate to take it to a garage unless I absolutely have to. What are some things I could trouble shoot before I take that final step?

My truck starts running hot then I turn the heater on and it blows cold air but every once in a while the heater will throw out hot air. Then the temp gauge will go down. I've check med the radiator cap...

I'd still check the thermostat. Or basically just replace it. Have you ever drained all the antifreeze and flushed the system? Good time to do both. If the hose's get real hot that doesn't really mean the thermostat open. Wouldn't they get hot even if the thermostat didnt open.? If the thermostat was stuck open you'd would have cold air and low temp gauge. Then maybe hit a pump or something and have the thermostat stick closed and have high temp. Maybe water pump. Check it when you have the belt off. Spin, pull & push the water pump pulley around. I'd replaced my water pump at about 110,000 on a '97 dodge Dakota. My 97 never had a very good heater. Always heated up more after driving. Idle never got it warmed up.

My 2003 dodge dakota 4.7L is overheating and I replaced the thermostat and it is still doing it. What else could it be?

Cooling fan , relays , coolant temperature sensor, if all this checks out then its the water pump.

Where is the coolant temperature sensor?

I went to an autio parts store and looked in a Hayes repair manual that told me where the temperature sensor is located. It is behind the alternator screwed into the top of the engine block right beside the upper radiator hose.
