Just fixed my Audi TT ... timing belt snapped so the head had to come off to replace valves. used dial guage on top of piston !
if head is on then there is a plug you can remove that allows you to see top dead center..

Audi afu timing belt timing marks

If you have a dohc engine like i have (2.3i) this is what i did. i could not find any markings on the covers to indicate tdc so i did what i've learned from an "old timer". Remove the no.1 spark plug (cam pully), take a big screwdriver and stick it in the hole until you feel the piston. Turn the engine clockwise (as the motor turn) always keep the screwdriver with one hand you will see and feel the screwdriver moving up or down depending on where the piston sits. When the scredriver start to come up, start turning slowly until you will feel the screwdriver will stop for a second and then it will dip down again. Turn the engine anti-clockwise until you will feel again that slight hesitation, remember it is all about feeling. Once you have that slight hesitation just before the screwdriver wants to move up or down that is your tdc on your sub assembly. Your cylinder head timing pully should have a dot on it. On the cover behind the pully is a cut out about 6mm, line up that dot with the mark and you should have the tdc for your cylinder head. Alternatively if you cannot find any markings do the following. Remove your tapped cover, turn the cam pully until your 2 front lobes of your cam faces upwards like a "v". If it is done correctly your timing belt will go over the pullies with ease.NB!!! It works for me (experience) if this sounds complicated i suggest that you get professional help.

How do i time my Golf 1 correctly? it consumes a lot

its tricky enough if your not sure what your doing but ill run you through it. 1. remove top rocker cover and timing belt cover. 2 make up the position of the pully on the cam shaft at the top and the drive shaft at the bottom, this marks are you fail safe incase you cant time the engine. 3 remove the timing belt and pully tentioner, note if your going this far you are as well to replace the timing belt, tentioner and water pump. 4 On the cam shaft at the top if you force them to turn you will see a small indicator mark on the shaft this mark has to line up with the other indicator mark on the housing between the cam shaft and the cam shaft pully, once they line up your top end is timed, mark up the pully incase it moves. 5 on the drive shaft pully there is also markings that have to line up but you can also feel the position of the pully as you turn it, you will feel the piston been forced up and it is timed at top dead centre on cylinder one, which means the the piston has to be at the top just before the point of returning back down, using your feeling as a guide and the markings lined up you will have timing. also mark up this pully, your new marking should be very very close to the fail safe markings you put on at the start. when you have your marking replace the timing belt with the longest distance between pully contact going on first, try not disturb your timing or your hard work will have been for nothing, make sure the tentioner on the belt is tight but not to tight to the point where you ll stretch the belt or snap it, put everything back as you found it and crank the engine, job done, best of luck. hope this helps( rate me on my answer thanks )

Timing belt installation alfa 156

remove the fan belt first them start removing the bolts holding on the timing belt cover. once its off you have remove the large pully at the bottom of the engine. Mark up the small pully on the bottom and the two at the top to get your timing, make sure they dont move. release the timing belt tentioner and remove the old belt. you kit should have a new tentioner, idle pully and belt. above all mark sure your timing marks dont move, or your in trouble when you start the car.

2003 Audi TT No electric power to fuel pump/ignition

When your tmming belt went dint that bend the valves.Do a comprestion test firstly. As this is a interferance engine.when the belt snaps the likely of valve to piston contact is very likely. Also change the camshaft sensor.
