Question about 1996 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Open Question

Won't Start 1996 220C 4 cyl Problem began when parked on incline. would not start, pushed to flat area and it started, this happened 2x, now I stopped for gas and no go. came back 8 hrs later an it started, tried starting next morning, no luck. Had a starting problem last year and replaced switch behind ignition, worked fine, checked codes and all indicated ok ?? now what?

    Replaced fuel pump and filter, flushed fuel injection system, works fine now....

hi,seem all part have been check,to check further,you need to use a pressure gauge, to check the lower and upper chamber of your fuel distributor,only dealer have the tools,valve clearance is a hydraulic valve,no need to adjust,seem your car start,engine timing is ok,ty

SOURCE: the car won't start in the morning

Let's test the battery. Turn on yout headlights ant try to crank engine.
If the headlights dim, the battery is dead. If the headlightd go out you have a bag connection.
Now if the battery is dead we need to start it to ck the charging ststem.
If the indicarion is a bad connection then the battery cables beed removing clean and tight reinstsllation( special attento both ends of boyj cables.
To ck altrnator engine must be running and uou need a 10 dollar multimer from a parts stor and then get back to me K?

Your radio/nav system needs a code. Go the your dealer's parts department , give them the VIN of your car( should be free $0). Punch in the code through the car radio and your radio/nav system should work right away.

I know on the L.H. (previous fuel injection system) models there was a module called a base module that worked as a big overvoltage relay and powered up all the control units for the engine and drivetrain,they had 4 to 6 10amp. fuses in the top and theywould blow fuses and sometimes fail themselves causing no start conditions. I beleive yours is an H.F.M. system. I used to do roadside and i'm also a mercedes benz tech. The first thing I would try would be to put the car in nuetral and see if it starts. the nuetral safety switches of that era are problomatic. next I would check my brake light fuse in the engine compartment fuse box. That fuse also powers the starter relay-even though it doesn't state that on the fuse schematic. Also to answer your question about a lockout relay-yes there is but they rarely cause a problem. seems like your key is not being recognized, possible your tumbler..the ring around your ignition switch is bad

best advice is to have the fault codes read first
It is possible that a fault with an ambient temp sensor will show, fault MAF/VAF sensor or BARO sensor
get the codes first then read the workshop manual on how to test and where they can be found
because it starts and then restarts after stopping , the fault is indicated in that area

When driving my daughters 2004 Dodge stratus, 4 cyl it will start choking and surging when you begin to stop, once you put it in park and press gas peddle it will stop and drives good until you stop

check for a faulty /loose vacuum hose to the brake booster or a faulty brake booster diaphragm. From you description it is happening when your foot is on the brake and slowing down and there is a vacuum leak that is upsetting the mixture for the engine.

Elantra won't start and moves when it's in park

I'm going to say something happened to the cable between the shifter and the transmission. There is a switch on the transmission that prevents you from starting the engine in anything other than park or neutral. The transmission is probably in reverse or drive which would allow it to roll.
Someone would need to check the lever on the trans where the shift cable is attached.

Sounds like you may have damaged the parking claw. Put the parking brake on when you park on an incline, You may need a new parking gear or gear claw.

Shift gear is stuck on park and can't get it out of gear.

Hi there,

There are multiple things that must all happen in order for the shifter to move from park.

1. Make sure the key ignition switch is in the "Run" position (the position just before the "start" position).

2. Brake pedal is depressed (usually pushed in a couple of inches or more at least to release the button on the shifter).

3. Push in the button on the shifter and pull back (you may need to push the shifter slightly forward or back a little for the button to move freely).

If the button on the shifter still doesn't push in freely, there is a problem with the mechanical lock-out linkage or electronic switch that releases the button lock. Check under the dash area along the brake pedal arm for anything that doesn't look correct.

4. If the car is on an incline/slope/hill, it will put a lot of pressure on the parking pin in the transmission. Usually a strong tug or pull on the shifter will pull it out while you're pushing on the brake pedal to prevent rolling when it releases. Make sure to set the parking/emergency brake first to prevent this next time .

if the nuetral safety was a problem the car would not start at all, sounds like you have a defective engine wiring harness, this is the most common cause of this i have seen while working for Ford.

It sounds like the linkage may be out of adjustment a bit. If it is not either in Neutral or Park, of course it will not let the starter engage, Try to start it in Neutral if it will not start in Park, or try it in neutral, and pull or push on it a bit. If it starts when you push or pull it, adjust the linkage that goes to the switch, I think it is under the console cover.
