If you have fluid in the steering tank, check the belt that drives the power steering pump, it might be loose or you could have lost it.

if it is not loose, then you could have the problem in the pump itself. it looses it's compression to drive the fluid out of the pump.

Steering wheel stiffens when turning

Sounds like your power steering pump is low on fluid or worn out. Eventually it will just get so you have to fight to even turn it. Mine went that way and I had to replace the power steering pump.

My 1999 Toyota Rav, while driving, suddenly became difficult to steer...the peddles also stiffened up. The engine then cut off and the lights came on. Suggestions?

Difficult to steer:Possible power steering belt failure.

Bad alternator? Check voltage at battery.Needs at least 12 V. to enguage starter. Try jumping the battery from another vehicle.

Steering wheel stiffens making first few turns after turning the car on

It would be difficult to say why the problem exists.
If the pump is low on fluid, obviously it needs to be filled up. Then the question is where is the leak ?
If the pump is full and has never been low, the problem could be something in the suspension that is binding up. And that problem could be from the wreck.
If you raise the front of the car and the wheels are off the ground, you should be able to turn the steering wheel full right and left without much effort and with the engine off.

Low levels of power steering fluid can cause the steering to suddenly become hard and stiff

Ford 1993 Taurus steering

Have you checked the power steering fluid level? The reservoir for the fluid will be at the front of the engine, where the belt runs the power steering pump. If it's low or out add a little power steering fluid till full, then start car and slowly turn wheels back and forth from stop to stop-not too ******* the stops (when the steering won't turn further that way...that's what I mean by stops)....Turn wheel one way full travel, then reverse and turn the other way. Check the fluid level again, and add as needed.
If fluid is not low, the belt may be too loose to make the power steering pump work, or you may have a bigger problem that needs professional attewntion.

Power steering pump replaced, start to work ok, after 10 milles driving, steering wheel is hard, like pump is not working, under hood everything look ok.

YOU HAVE AIR IN THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM.YOU NEED TO BLEED POWER STEERING PUMP FIRST BEFORE DRIVING VECHICLE.CHECK POWER STEERING FLUID LEVEL ADD MORE POWER STEERING UNTIL REACH FULL COLD MARK..RAISE VECHICLE FRONT WHEELS OFF THE GROUND.START ENGINE LET IT IDLE WHILE TURNING STEERING WHEEL LEFT TO RIGHT NON STOP DONT LOCK OR STOP STEERING WHEEL KEEP TURNING IT SEVERAL TIMES CHECK POWER STEERING FLUID IF LOW ADD UNTIL YOU GET COLD MARK ON DIP STICK DONT OVER FILL POWER STEERING PUMP BLOW A SEAL.IF POWER STEERING FLUID LOOK TAN COLOR SYSTEM FULL OF AIR.TURN OFF IGNITION LET CAR SET FOR A WHILE CHECK FLUID LEVEL.IF STEERING WHEEL FEEL STIFF HARD TURNING DONT DRIVE CAR UNTIL YOU HAVE NORMAL STEERING.IF STILL HAVE AIR IN SYSTEM BLEED SYSTEM UNTIL AIR IS OUT.

I have had the power steering pump replaced on my 99 pontiac grand prix, since then it has had no problems with power steering for about two months......then all of a sudden its making that whining noise...

YOU NEED TO BLEED POWER STEERING SYSTEM BY HAVING LOW FLUID AIR ENTER THE SYSTEM.PARK CAR ON SOLID LEVEL GROUND SAFELY RAISE SUPPORT VECHICLE ON JACK STANDS.YOU CAN LEAVE CAR ON GROUND BUT TURNING STEERING WHEELS BACK AND FORTH WILL WEAR SPOT IN TIRES.TURN STEERING WHEEL TO THE LEFT WITH THE ENGINE OFF.CHECK POWER STEERING FLUID.ADD MORE FLUID IF LOW.MAKE SURE FLUID LEVEL ON COLD MARK ON DIP STICK.THE YOU CRANK CAR UP LET IDLE LITTLE HIGH FOR 15 SECONDS.THEN TURN OFF ENGINE.CHECK POWER STEERING FLUID LEVEL MAKE SURE ITS ON COLD MARK AT DIP STICK.THEN YOU START THE CAR UP WHILE IDLING TURN STEERING WHEEL IN BOTH DIRECTIONS SLOWLY TO THE STOPS DONT HOLD IN STOP TURN STEERING WHEEL LEFT AND RIGHT FOR SEVERAL TURNS.STOP ENGINE CHECK FLUID IF FLUID TAN STILL HAS AIR IN SYSTEM.LET CAR SET A LITTLE WHILE TRY THE BLEEDING PROCEDURE AGAIN.THERE IS A REASON POWER STEERING FLUID WAS LOW CHECK ALL POWER STEERING HOSES AT POWER STEERING PUMP TO THE RACK PINION ASSEMBLY.

Hello, I have a Suzuki Grand Vitara (2006). This morning, all of a sudden, I found it very difficult to turn left and right. It drives fine if I don't have to turn. :( The steering wheel gets very hard...

well, the first thing to check is the power steering fluid, make sure thats full. next thing is to make sure the belt is still on for the power steering and that it is tight,a loose or missing belt will cause this, if the fluid is full and belt is tight then we may be looking at a bad power steering pump or steering gear. to find out which of the two is the problem a preasure test needs to be done on the pump. hope this helps.
