Question about 1988 Isuzu Trooper 2 Door

1 Answer

Electrical problem My dad has a 1988 trooper 4 cylinder. He recently put a new battery in the truck. When he tried to start it, nothing happened. No instruments, no crank, nothing. He let it set for 2 weeks. He gets back in it, and it immediately cranks, everything works great, idles fine. He turns it off and tries to restart it. Nothing. No instrument, no crank. We have no idea where to start looking for the problem. Help!

Check the ignition lock and tumbler and the electrical part of the switch itself. It could be as easy as the plug needs to be pushed in all the way.

1988 Isuzu Trooper stopped running. No electric power, battery good, wires good

check the wires on the battery terminal and the starter motor as one or the other will supply power to the ignition circuit and if that fails then check the big fuses under the bonnet in the power distribution box

you need to get a new ign. lock cylinder and chip key. Or you can get a lock cylinder and copy your old key with a regular key no chip. Take new cylinder, put old chip key in it. Plug into harness at the bottom of steering column just behind the dash, fine orange wire from existing one in the column. Hide lock cylinder under dash and start car with copy of old key.

Need to replace starter

I recommend you get the Haynes repair manual on your vehicle. Start by removing the negative battery terminal, then removing the retaining bolts from the starter followed by removing the wires from the starter. Reverse the process to put the new starter on.

1988 isuzu trooper 4 cyl 4wd vibration

I actually have one of these myself that I drive daily! It is missing, several reasons for that, one plugs or wires, second these are notorius for headgasket problems and if it leaks can fould a plug. MIne did everytime it cooled down, but then after a few minutes it would dry out the plug and run ok. The wires and plugs would be my second check, the coolant level my first. These are great little cars and worth fixing in my opinion, I hope this helps you some, And Merry Christmas

My 1999 Isuzu Trooper

Troopergal is probably right. It does sound like an electrical problem. However with an electrical problem it normally won't always start again right away. Another possibility is you have a clogged fuel filter. This is an easy one to fix. They are small in line placic filters in the fuel line and are easy to replace. They only cost a couple of dollars and are available at any spares shop.
