My 2004 altima is consuming oil at an excessive rate, there are no visible leaks on pavement. When I took it to the dealer they told me it would take a few days to find where the leak is and cost $250. I forgot what he said it could be leaking from but he said if it's from one area it could cost around $850 and if it was another spot it could be around $3000. I've just been putting oil in it but I know it has to be fixed is this price too high? Because I feel like I'm being taken for a ride!

Hello! Sounds like a ride to me...Since you do not see any oil on the pavement, and it's using oil at an excessive rate, I would believe you would see blue or black smoke coming out of the tail pipe...
let me know if you do...Also, does the engine run normally?...No hesitation,or rough idle?...A plugged Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve will cause an engine to consume oil...See photos below...
First is for a 2.5L and second a 3.5L...Both cost around $10...Guru.....saailer

You can have a brand new engine put in for $3000 with a warranty. He may be saying the seal are bad and that's where your oil is leaking from. The $250 fee to just find the leak is excessive, $850 don't sound bad if it's an actual problem and depending on the problem if it's dealing with replacing the timing belt and other components. But I would stay away from the $3000 deal. You need to get a print out on what he is needing to charge and what parts are being used and do your research on those parts. Some will pay a $100 for a part and kick the price up to $125-$150 so be careful and check around.

2014 Altima -I got an oil change at Midas (worst mistake ) about two months ago. Apparently the guy half assed it and my car started smoking under the hood after I drove off. Brought it back left again and...

Their must be some oil stored somewhere and it is dripping on your exhaust manifold, but never pressure wash your engine, could cause worse problems,in time the smell will go away, just be patient. It will burn off in time.

Leaky rear main seal

I bought a 2000 RL used, with some factory warranty remaining, and then bought an extended warranty. While hnder warranty, car began to smell up my garage from fumes from oil dripping onto hot exhaust. Not enough oil at that point to show up on garage floor. Complained to dealer about the odor but Acura Master Mechanic (said he) couldn't find source of odor (although I told him I suspected an oil leak because I had prior experience with oil leaks and resultant smells on another car). On the next service visit after the extended warranty expired, same master mechanic said my RL's rear main oil seal was leaking onto exhaust causing odor. And the dealer wanted north of $1000 to fix it. I declined. Leak has steadily gotten worse - now visible drops on garage floor. An independent repair shop quoted $650 plus the cost of replacing expensive, special Honda transmission fluid. Took my complaint all the way up the chain to the head of Honda in Japan, but got no assistance. No more Honda products for me.

I have a 2004 Chrysler that the service guys say the engine has gone bad due to faulty gas - anybody else hear of such a thing? They say that Chrysler sent out a bulletin about it?

if the coolant is disappearing but not leaking to the ground. and the oil seems overfilled. i would suspect the misfire on cylinder five to be caused by a blown head gasket. as you recently had the oil changed it would be more difficult to visibly see a color change in oil due to contamination. i suggest you have the vehicle taken to a shop and have a hydro carbon test performed to check for exhaust fumes out of radiator to determine if head gasket is the issue

2004 dakota a little white foam is in the oil fill tube i took it to a mechanic he said it moisture from hot engine cooling off overnight there was no coolant smell to it. no foam on the dip stick is...

I would not worry till after the foam gets heavier and more frequent, then you may have a head gasket leaking. If you change your oil and check the level in the morning and there is still a foam on the dipstick I would monitor it frequently for excessive foam or swhite sludge, then worry about a leak.

I have a 2004 Nissan Altima and i had my oil changed and the service guy told me that i had a small leak around the oil filter. He actualy said it was inside the housing, it could easily be replaced, even...

I think he is saying you have a gasket leak at the filter housing, you will need proper tools to do this and a catch can of sort when you remove the oil filter cause you will have oil drop down.

I would say do not tackle this problem if you have no tools and are uncertain on how to approach this repair on your own, take it to a Repair Shop that you know or a referral of a good repair shop in your area.

Nizzan 02 Black smoke coming out tailpipe and consumption of oil

Black smoke is caused by excess fuel that has entered the cylinder area and cannot be burned completely. Poor fuel mileage is also a common complaint when black smoke comes out of the tailpipe. Black smoke out the tailpipe is the least cause for alarm. Excess fuel will usually effect engine performance, reduce fuel economy, and produce a fuel odor. Some of the causes of excess fuel are a carburetor that is out of adjustment, a faulty fuel pump, a leaky fuel injector, or a faulty engine computer or computer sensor. If black smoke is present, check the engine oil to make sure excess fuel has not contaminated it. Do not start the engine if a heavy, raw fuel smell can be detected in the engine oil.
