Question about 1992 Buick LeSabre

Shuddering/jerking on highway, pull over, wont start for 30 mins

Driving down the highway the other day and the engin started jerking and having to work a lot harder to hold its speed. i kept going for a while until i lost all power. after pulling over and letting it cool it reluctantly started.
after getting into town i stopped. and i was in a parking lot where the engine would start and i would get going and it would start jerking again and stall after a few moments.
today on the highway home it was doing similar things but i was catching it early. about every 60 miles or so it would shudder and i would pull over and let it cool down then start up.
at the end of my trip i stopped for gas and it wouldn't start for about 30 mins. first time it did start it didnt sounds quite right.

over heating? thermostate fuel pump/filter fan relay

thanks for your help

update. i continued to drive it to work and back for a week. it has only stalled once while stopped waiting for a train to pass.

my commute is only about 25 mins each way, and the only time it stalled was as a i was leaving work on a hot day. (i had only gone about 3 blocks)

it ended up being a cam sensor.

i got it tuned up while they were at it; plugs, wires, air and fuel filters.

runs like a champ, i must have got 10-20 hp back after the tune up.

another week later the cam sensor doesn't seem to be the fix.

stalls are becoming more frequent and apear to be aggregated by hot weather.

taking it in tomorrow what the expectation of getting a new fuel pump.

it will stutter (feels almost like a gear change or a blip in power) then depending on speed i have about a mile before the engine dies but everything else works. after about 20 mins it will start again and i can continue on my way.

problem started with engine stalling out on the way home from but, not on the way to work. it was cool mornings and hot afternoons. this happened for about a week or two. before it got very bad, instead of stalling out once or twice a day. it would stall everytime i would stop, but it start back up. now it will not start up now, only way i can keep it started is by keeping my foot one the gas pedal, and it still runs like ****, and smokes as i keep my foot on the gas pedal.

Last time I had that happen in a car everything blew. I found out the root of the problem was my timing chain, but I can tell you, you don't want to wait to get that checked out in any case or you will end up with a lot more problems.

It appears you may have a bad ignition coil that cuts out after it gets hot. Not uncommon.

91 toyota 4x4 22re overheats on highway, but not at idle.

original issue sounded like thermostat but now that you have lost power i would have to say thermostat, blown head gasket, and warped head

to check thermostat find and remove place in pot of boiling water the see if it opens, then to ice water to check if closes.

the only way i know to check headgasket and head is to check oil and water. oil will have water in it, and water iw have oil in it
