Why is the engine not starting

If the belt broke, and you put a new belt on with everything in the same position, most likely the belt is not correctly installed. The
cam position and crankshaft must be in a exact position, with
marks on both to match a similar mark on the non moving part of the engine. If your engine is an "interference" engine you are
in big trouble with a broken timing belt because valves are bent
not closing and other problems. I hope this is not the case.
Goggle your make year model and timing marks You should be able to find pictures that will show the marks that must line up.
I had a belt off by just one cog and had your problem. Double
check to be sure you have the right timing belt from your supplier. There is a chance someone mixed things up. Do you have spark?

Cam shaft

put the notch on crank pulley align with tdc (top dead center mark) on timing cover

Remove valve cover, firing order for a 4 cylinder engine 1342, piston 1 and 4 are up in same time, rocker arm on cylinder 1 intake and exhaust must have play, while on cylinder 4 must be in overlap both valves starting to open (partly depress),if no timing mark inser a screwdriver throught sparkplug opening turn gently to get the piston at tdc if so valve timing is ok without checking any mark,if you remove the cover you will see the mark at the right place

1 and 4, 3 and 2 are companion piston, you could do the same with 6 or 8 cylinders, you must know firing order

Timing marks hyundai excell

What year, and what engine?

If it broke I wouldn't bother replacing it until I confirmed that the valves are NOT bent! Usually when the belt brakes on a Hyundai the piston will hit a valve or two and sometimes the valve will actually poke a hole in the piston.

Timing belt was broken and as aresult camshaft broke into 5 pieces and also valves were bent, any reason as to why this resulted?. Also there are no timing marks on the engine. how do I do the timing

You didnot give full details of the vehicle like the year and engine size? how ever the timing belt should be changed every 90,000 Km. There has to be timing marks, go to any parts place and ask them for a print out for replacing the timing belt.

REPLACED THE 99 ISUZU3.2 TIMING BELT...FOLLOWED THE PROCEDURES IN THE HAYNES MANUAL,MARKS ARE LINED UP CORRECTLY,ENGINE STILL POPPING BACK THROUGH THE AIR INTAKE AND HAS NO POWER...IS THERE A TIMING...

There is a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) that may apply to your situation. It is bulletin number IB00-S005.

This TSB addresses re=timing of the camshaft sub-gear in the event the timing belt was broken or the cams were rotated with the timing belt removed.

The only other thing I can suggest is to check for bent or broken valves. Popping back through the intake can only be caused by three things.
1. Camshaft timing incorrect
2. Broken or very weak valve spring.
3. Burnt or bent intake valve

Timingbelt broken need timing marks and will valves be bent?

Well!
When a timing belt breaks, That means there is 99% chance that the valve wont get bent but you really need to check them and if you would like to you can do that after you put new timing belt on. what Year and model is that Volkswagen ? Thanks

1997 plymouth grand voyager v6 3.0L broken timing belt

I had the same thing happen, No, I was told this is not one of the engines that allows the piston to contact the valves. I replaced the timing belt 2 years ago and had no valve problems.
