My 1990 BMW 525i is over heating


Try replacing the thermostat. It is supposed to open when the water temp reaches a certain point usually around 180 degrees. It might be stuck in the closed position.

My 2000 dodge caravan is overheating and my overflow tank is literally overflowing. I have no leaks in radiator or hoses. Could it be my waterpump or thermostat or just a clogged hose.


Yes, it could be a few issues, I always believe to go the cheapest route first, so you are not just replacing parts to be replacing, Based on your description, Normally it would not be overflowing if your pump is not working, It could be a clogged hose, you would have to flush system to see if that was the case, but based on my feeling, i believe it is a stuck thermostat, If your tank is overflowing, it would have to be a main hose block, but i don't believe that is the case, i would have thermostat replaced, to confirm that, for a around 50 bucks (if you stay away from dealer) you can have the radiator flushed, which is a good idea anyway, then you will know for sure it is the thermostat, and they can put that in after they flush it, or you can put thermostat in, pick there brain, when they flush it, and they can point where it is, it is just a couple of bolts to take off, clean gasket area, replace with new gasket, after of course taking old thermostat out and replacing with new one.

Hello to all yo motorheads out there! I am replaceing the heater hoses on a 1996 Jeep Cherokee (the small one) w/ a 4.0 & a/c. I puchaced the factory molded heater core inlet hose as it has different...


Don't have a diagram but, the hose from the thermostat housing goes to the top inlet on the heater control valve. Hose from water pump goes to lower port on control valve on same side.
port on center of valve goes to firewall lower connection. same side, lower port goes to upper firewall connection.
Make sure you re-attach the vacuum line to the valve.
To re-fill system, turn the heater control to high, run the engine and add coolant. Watch the temp gauge. When temp gets close to normal operating temp (about 205 degrees (f)) shut engine off and wait about four minutes. Re- start, continue adding slowly.
When the level suddenly drops that means the thermostat has opened. Continue running for about five minutes to permit air to escape. Top off radiator and close cap. Fill overflow reservoir to proper level and check everything over for leaks.
Watch the temp gauge while driving to make sure all is good and make sure to re-check fluid level after engine cools down.
A small amount over-full is fine. Make sure that the system has a 50/50 antifreeze mix. Less or more changes boiling point and freeze point usually in the wrong direction.

Over boiling problem while temperature guage remains normal.


Replace the thermostat. The Thermostat is not functioning correctly. It is closed = not allowing the radiator fluid to flow when the engine is cold. When the Thermostat reaches a certain temperature, it is suppose to open = allowing the radiator fluid to flow.
Your Thermostat is not opening, causing the engine fluid to reach boiling point. When this happens, the sheer pressure will 'blow' boiling radiator fluid out the radiator cap. The Radiator Cap is designed to do this if operating properly.
Change that Thermostat and the over boiling should disappear. And yes it is something you can do yourself without much problem.

Leave 02 sensor alone ,it is doing it's job . It is heated up because of lean fuel mixture due to incorrect engine temp.,replace thermostat before looking further.

Fan should turn clockwise when viewed from the front, there should be a diagram on the radiator shroud or front cowl showing the belt routing.
I'd check the fan clutch, if that's working the impeller has fallen off of your water pump, it happens.

does your heat get cold then hot flexuating? also these head gas are known to go! if it leaks external that would be on the left side back standing in front of car other is pull dip stick any sludge on it foamy if so you might have a head gasket situation good luck hope this helps
