Question about 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

Electrical Problems I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. Sometimes when I insert the key into the ignition the jeep will not start. All the gauges will flutter around and there is a clicking noise. After a few tries I can play with it and get it to start but this is a recurring problem. I do not know where to look as vehicle wiring is not my forte. Any help with a diagnosis would be greatly appreciated.

My 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo will not turn over when I try to start it. No clicking sound - just nothing. The electrical is all fine; opens with keyless entry mechanism, lights go on, windows roll...

I would use a jumper cable from the positive battery terminal to the starter to see if the starter and solenoid are good. If the starter works you probably are having issues with the ignition switch electric contact base. The part of the switch you put the key is the tumbler. Below that is the contact base where all the electric stuff happens . Yours is probably dirty or broken , but can usually be changed easily by taking off the steering column covers. You may need some special tools (anti -theft sockets or screwdriver inserts). The anti-theft screw and bolt tools are available from a lot of tool supply stores.

Have a 2008 jeep grand cherokee laredo put key in ignition and dash board says damaged key and another service security key jeep wont start

This sounds like a bad chip in the key, try a spare key, if it starts with spare key then key is bad, if it doesnt start then you will need reprograming

Sudden shut down

Hmm, this sounds like a electrical problem involving the ignition control module (computer) or the body control module.  They may not be bad but they are not getting power.  This could be due to one of many connection or relay problems.  Unless you know how to diagnose electrical problems yourself, you will need to get it to the shop.
