Question about 1989 Ford F 150

1 Answer

Fuel Problems I just purchased an 89 Ford F150 with a 302 and it will not start without ether or gas but once it starts it runs on its on and at idle is running rich (black smoke out of exhaust). I've replaced high pressure pump, fuel filter, pressure regulator, and cooling temp. sensor. With key on engine off it has 40 pounds fuel pressure. The check engine light stays on constantly and the fuel pump runs constantly and when I try to get self test codes the light never blinks..it just stays on. Can anyone help with this probelm?

if yes, I think you have to check also air filter, throttle position sensor, and then fuel injectors operation.

Sounds like your fuel pump starting to die. It is not getting enough gas under heavy acceleration which is 100% fuel pump slowly dying. At start up it might not be building up enough fuel pressure to feed the system but the shot of ether and engine cranking helps pressure the system just enough for the fuel pump to trickle the gas and run the engine at low rpms.

1989 ford bronco 2 ignition problems maybe

It could have a weak or failing ignition coil. The other thing I can think to look for would be an exhaust restriction.. (clogged catalytic converter)

What about the fuel filter?? was it replaced?

There are many things that can cause this. Do you have a check engine light on? Have your mass airfow sensor checked, also the throttle position sensor. Have your fuel pressure, and volumn checked, also the fuel pressure regulator. If that all checks out ok, suspect a restricted cat. converter. There is an inexpensive backpressure test that most shops can perform.

How can i fix a clogged fuel pump on a 2001 chevy malibu. the fuel pump is working ( you can hear it hum when you turn the key) I removed my back set to make sure and the car will turn over but wont start....

Have you changed the fuel filter? Did it die while driving, or just wouldn't start? Don't use starting fluid on a gas engine! It will cause a lot more problems than it solves. Ether, starting fluid is made for diesel engines... not gas, not ever. If it won't start, it isn't lacking ether. It's lacking gas, air or spark.

1992 Ford Ranger XLT V6 wont start without ether

first go to an auto partstore and have the code checked. most do it for free. could be coil, fuel pump, fuel filter, air filter or even a bad gas cap. but the dianogstic test should pin point the problem.

yes checked fuel pressure and replaced the fuel filter, checked the mapp sensor, tested throttle position sensor, has strong spark, 50psi fuel pressure, fresh tune up, runs real rich and rough idle but wont rev up like fuel injectors arent speeding up, also checked exhaust. thanks julius
