The plastic mast that runs inside of the metal mast has snapped & its trying to reel it in. You have two solutions to this. First disconect the plug to the antena or pull the fuse or Relay. GM sells a replacement part for this, its a small metal shaft conectes to a plastic tail. Its not that hard to do but it takes patience. The mechanism housing is riveted together so you have to drill out the rivets, replace the plastic ribbon & replace the rivets with srews & nuts. Or if you preffer, You can get a whole new antena but they are a bit pricey unless you find a Universal aftermarket unit that fits...

Testimonial: "The answer to the antenna problem sounds very logical. I most likely will unplug it because it ran my battery down on the coldest day of the year!"

Remove broken antenna

Most electric Antennas require two people to replace. First turn key on watch and listen to antenna motor as some one turns on radio do this several times. Now remove spanner nut the antenna mast goes through then have them turn radio on again this you assist the rest of the mast out of motor assembly watching what side the teeth are on the plastic cable . Now take new mast and fully extent it and lubricate with a machine oil 3 in 1 works great. slowly lower into housing trying to get first tooth hooked or close then turn radio off this will retract the antenna into the assembly hopefully on the first try it should be all the way in. don't worry re install retainer parts raise and lower several times the overrun clutching will get it in time.

Ok s I have a 96 318ti that the ignition was just spinning ...so i cant afford the $ the dealer wants to fix so I wanna hook up push button start and toggle switch...lights will come on and i can hear the...

You have to hold the key near the antenna ring that surrounds the key hole. While I was waiting for my new lock cylinder to arrive, I pulled off the steering column cover and detached the electrical part of the ignition. I was then able to start and stop the car by turning that switch with a flat blade screwdriver, but I had to have the key near the antenna ring in order to crank the starter. Once the car is running, you can put the key back in your pocket.

The gears on the automatic antenna are stripped so when I turn the car off the antenna motor runs non-stop trying to lower the antenna. How do I disconnect the motor?

If i remember correctly this cars ant is located on the pass/side fender, the best way without trying to pull the fuse because then you will loose other systems, look under the passenger side part of the dash, you will need to remove the cover if its still there, most older cars are missing this cover, there are a few screws holding the cover remove them and drop and pull cover out, next look under the dash you will see wires coming from the fender area towards the radio there are green and theres a plug there, look close to the right and just unplug the connector, have the key on so you can here when the ant motor stops running and this will take care of that problem. good day.

Power antenna motor will not shut off

I assume that the power antenna unit is an original equipment unit, if so.
1. Does it run for about a minute then stop? If this is the case, your antenna shaft needs to be replaced. This is a very simple procedure that your local radio install shop can do for you in about 20 minutes.
2. If the motor never shuts off as long as the key is on, you probably have a defective relay on the antenna motor. At this point you need to replace the entire unit. A job that can be a bit pricey because of the price of the unit itself. A cheeper fix is to replace the power antenna with a manually telescopic unit, (no motor), or a fixed unit, (doesn't go down). If you opt for the latter, remember to unscrew or lower the antenna in automatic car washes!

Antenna doesn't retract when car is off

The antenna is wired to go down when the key is turned off. The motor is probably stripped out. You need to replace the motor at the base of the antenna, or unplug the bad one to make it quit running with the key off

Intermittent clicking noise from my inop antenna

to stop the noise from returning, simply disconnect the electrical connector near the antenna motor (follow the wires out of the unit). this unit may be disassembled and thoroughly cleaned (especially the copper electrical contacts) to restore it to near new condition sometime in the future....about 3 to 4 hours for a novice.the clicking is due to the motor "coming alive" when an electric signal can get through the oxidized contacts. prolonged "clicking" may not harm the unit...there is some chance the antenna's nylon gear track has separated...try to pull up on the antenna itself after disconnecting car battery. if it cannot be pulled up, then chances are good for earlier described restoration. if motor housing looks VERY corroded, a full replacement of unit is best sol'n.
