Question about 1998 Jaguar XJ8L

1 Answer

Further instruction to your answer XJ8 Jaguar gearbox fault.

Melnavz,
Could you advise how much experience you have with Jaguar cars, specifically the XJ8. You say, I should fill with oil. Where do I find the plug to remove, to fill and what oil do I use ? Do I need to remove the gearbox first ?
Do you know that this XJ8 gearbox is a sealed unit from the day it was manufactured and installed in the car ?
I thought my question was being put to experienced vehicle repair persons, specifically those whom have experienced this same problem.

My 2004 xj8 jaguar is having transmission problems.when I get up to 30 miles the transmission fault comes on it makes a grinding noise jerks.when i cut off and cut back on it stops and does it again

you need to get the fault codes out of the the tcm.ie, transmission control module with a scan tool suitable for your car. i think you have a problem within the gearbox or its control module, the fluid level and condition ie smell of burn {which indicates slipping clutches etc} should be checked first, which could indicate.mechanical problems the control module in your zf auto box is within the gearrbox, i dont think there is a self fix answer to your problem you need expert help, hope this was helpfull to you. cheers.

1999 Jaguar. Gearbox fault Restricted Performance light on. No first gear

I would make sure the fluid maintenance is done. The most likely cause is the transmission or transfer case is gone internally.
I would take the vehicle to the transmission shop.

Good Luck

Intermittent Gearbox Fault

Suggest you get the TCU codes read (Jaguar dealer or well equipped auto box specialist). Suggest you don't go component changing without a believable diagnosis, could be TCU, could be pressure or speed/load sensors, lots of things, many not as expensive as a new TCU!

2001 Jaguar XJ8L - Intermittant starting problem -gives Gearbox Fault & when you turn the key ,the engine does not start, battery good. I think It might be a wiring or switch problem. When the car does...

I had the same issue with my 2001 XJ8 and ended up having to have the car rewired from the engine to the battery. I was charged about $300 from a independent automotive electrician. Unfortunately this was after having a new starter and alternator installed! I was told that there were 2 or 3 service bulletins on this issue from Jaguar.

Good luck on this one, it's very frustating and had my car in the shop for about 3 weeks trying to figure this one out.
