Question about 1996 Pontiac Firebird

1 Answer

'96 Firebird Some days ago both headlight motors stoped working properly. When i turned them off the motor kept spining as if the headlights had not closed all the way. Since this problem started my horn does not sound right all the time, and tonight I was driving and the check gage light came on. So I stoped at a gas station to put some oil in. I checked the dip stick and it says that I have the right amount in, but when I started to drive it again the check gage light came back on. So I stoped and checked the dip stick again, and it still says I have the right amount of oil. I also looked under the car and no oil leaks. So whats going on with my car?

Hey
Have you had done or done any electrical work lately? It would appear that yes, either the daytime running light relay, or an auto-shut off relay is confused and it energizing when it is not supposed to.
i suggest to Take it to the dealer, they will know what to do.
other thing that can be possible is:electrial schematics and trace the control system for the lights. Most likely, if you have done electrial work, then it is a crossed wire. If not, then either a bad relay, or bad computer module is at fault

My lights turn on but will not flip up. What should I try in order to fix this problem?

Go by the headlight and check to see if they are vacuum or power. If they are vacuum then check for vacuum leaks or the cylinder by the headlight. If they are power check for power by the headlight motor. If there is power by the headlight motor and the motor still does not work the motor is junk. If there is no power check fuses, relays and wiring. Than

Niether driver or passenger headlights will pop up or turn on

It could be the motors that raise up the headlights are dead. Try replacing those and check the connectors to the motors for any damage. Also use a volt meter to see if the motor is getting any power and work from there. I know when mine was starting to go out it made a terrible noise when the headlight came down and then I could not just turn on my fog lights without the headlight coming up on the light with the motor that was going out. Hope this helps you out.

Ouch!  If both are doing it, I don't have a clue; I'm pretty sure that the motors are shut off by limit switches, similar to how wipers 'park' themselves and are probably adjustable although they may have gotten grime in the swtiches (should be sealed though) causing them to not contact properly.
