Actually, when the O/D light is flashing, the vehicle is indicating a problem within that specific system. When this happens with any system on the vehicle,a diagnostic trouble code is set in the vehicle computer's memory. What you did by disconnecting the battery was simply to erase the trouble code from the computer's memory. If the transmission feels like it is slipping,it probably is,and that's where the problem will be.You can drive the vehicle, and the code will reset again sooner or later,as will the O/D light flashing.Have the vehicle scanned when the code resets, try not to drive it very hard, because if the trans is slipping, driving it will worsen the damage/cost to repair.

That is an "out of parameter" warning, indicating that the position sensor for the overdrive solenoid is disconnected, malfunctioning, or detecting that your overdrive solenoid is out of position. My guess is that the sensor came disconnected but check to be sure.

it may be a bad transmission modulator valve located on the side of your transmission, vacum operated. a sudden downshift or forward shift when unexpected is sign of a bad modulator valve or a vacum leak to the to shop around for a garage w/references when it comes to transmission work though. check all the vacum lines to your transmision, you need to look on the underneath side of your truck on the side of transmission for a loose or disconnected vacum line on the side of the transmission. when you feel the vacum line, follow it to the top of engine, the vacum line is about 3/8th line, and may be disconnected or losing air. to make this short, when you drive the car, start out in low gear and shift the transmission, manually from 1st to 2nd to 3rd does it do right with no slipping? if it does this right and shifts great manually, the modulator valve on the side of the transmissions bad,or a bad vacum leak in-between.thank you for choosing

You should not use overdrive unless you are steadily going highway speeds. I had one of those and my ex liked to use cruise control on windy coastal roads. This caused it to shift back and forth from 3rd to overdrive constantly. So I disconnected the cruise control so he couldn't use it. Lol. I'm not suggesting this for you. You should keep overdrive off for now and have your transmission serviced. New filter & oil & flush the cooler. Make sure you ONLY USE THE RECOMMENDED FLUIDS!!!!!!!!!! See if that helps. Do not use overdrive pulling a trailer and going up a hill and do not use it if you are on windy roads where you are slowing down alot of times. Try letting off the gas for a second when you do want to engage the overdrive. Remember to always check your automatic tranny fluid with the engine running and fully warmed up.

It may be a faulty relay - usually behind the radio - it makes a clicking sound when you hit the button on the shift lever. Or it may be the overdrive solinoid which is mounted on the top of the tranny. Check all of your connestions first. One other thing - the wire from the shift lever overdrive button to the overdrive solenoid on the tranny may run over the top of the drive shaft - check for wear

2001 impala will not shift into overdrive

your overdrive clutch hub has gone out/worn out.
It can be replaced or you could have the whole transmission re-built or replaced with a low mileage one from the salvage yard , etc at a lower cost..(which is what I did)
This is common on these trannys.
