Will not stay idling

Check your set screw, and make sure it's not too low. Adjust the screw to the point that where it idles at the proper speed. Also, maybe check your throttle cable for too much slack.

replace spark plugs wires,problem could be ignition timing,idle speed too low.intake manifold vacuum leak,check all vacuum lines on intake check pcv valve make sure its getting vacuum and the vacuum line not disconnected or cracked broken if pcv is not working engine wont run correctly.

check your fuel pump pressure, sounds like fuel pump pressure low

likely fuel pump, dirty MAF sesnor or distributor CMP sensor going. go here

I would also change the igntition coil if you have not done that already. Have you changed the fuel filter? I would change the fuel filter, if you have a clogged filter thenit may run good at idle and less load conditions but when you call for more fuel during hard excelleration or at highway speeds the engine will not get enough and it will lean fire and buck and miss.

WHEN A CAR SHUT DOWN ON HIGHWAY OR FREEWAY.YOU CAN STILL HAVE FAULTY FUEL PUMP.IT COULD BE RUNNING BUT THE FUEL PRESSURE CAN BE TOO WEAK.THE 2.5 ENGINE FUEL PRESSURE IS 6.0 TO 7.0 PSI AND THE 3.3 ENGINE FUEL PRESSURE IS 37 TO 43 PSI. ANOTHER THING CHECK TO MAKE YOUR COOLANT IS NOT LOW.LOW COOLANT CAUSES ENGINE GET TOO HOT SHUT OFF.CHECK PVC VALVE AND EGR VALVE MAKE SURE THEY ARE NOT STUCK OPEN OR DISCONNECTED.AND MAKE SURE IDLE SPEED IS NOT TOO LOW YOU IDLE SPEED IS ON THE FACTORY STICKER UNDER THE HOOD.

Can you check fuel trims at idle and under load?
If fuel trim is high at low speed and load, look for a vacuum leak.
If fuel trim is high at high speed and loads, look for fuel volumn problem or restriction.
If fuel trim is high at all speeds and loads look for pcm input fault, maybe a maf sensor problem?
If fuel trim is negative low speed and load, look for fuel pressure regulator or injector leak. If fuel trim is negative at all speeds and loads check ect and iac.

If you have the spider fuel system, that system is noted for problems. key on engine off, 60--66 psi fuel pressure.

The best solution is to do a complete tune up with new spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, pcv valve and oil change.. If this still happen I would get some fuel injector cleaner, or use marvel mystery oil in both your oil(crankcase) and gas tank. You can get mystery oil at walmart..its in a red bottle with black label.
