ABS and Parking Brake Indicator light...

Both of these lights come on shortly after I start moving the vehicle and they won't go off until you turn the switch off.

What causes the dash brake indicator to stay on?

First of all, the abs problem... NO do not start there, start with checking your brake fluid.. thats the number one cause for that light and no other lights on your dash to be on... if that is your problem fill it up and address the brake leak... brake fluid doesnt evaporate and your car doesnt use it up. if its low its going some where best way to do this is park on a clean surface or slide cardboard under your car pump your brakes 10 times and then examine the cardboard or move the car and look for wet spots that wernt there before or you could also have a friend lay on the ground a few feet back and look for drips while your pressing the brake pedal careful not to get any brake fluid in the eye it burns like no other... if you find a leak have it fixed if you dont it might still be a internal leak into the power brake booster and you should have someone look at it NORMALLY when you have a ABS problem with you car BOTH THE ABS LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT will be on not just one but the other awnsers could be correct too the brake indicator light does come on when the emergancy or parking brake is enabled try pulling the release and pull up on the parking brake pedal at the same time.. or if its a center parking brake push it all the way down with the button pushed

1999 Windstar drives fine for awhile then something starts to happen the abs light comes on the trak light comes on the lights won't go hi and low no backup lights the turn signal won't turn o

Just as a precaution, please check the brake fluid reservoir on that model. There is a sensor at the base of the master cylinder which can leak brake fluid over the wiring circuit, and cause the electrics to short out. In some extreme cases this has caused fires in some vehicles. This is why Ford had issued a recall to this particular model in the states at least.

My ABS and parking brake light on my dashboard stay on. It used to be just when it was hot outside, but now it is cold and it is still on. I tried pulling the parking brake, but it stays on until I turn...

Why haven't you taken it in, to be diagnosed and repaired?

Any light on the dash, of any vehicle made in the last 30 years, indicates a possible malfunction of a vehicle system. Those check lights are govt mandated,so you get on it quickly,in case it is emission related.

You have an ABS system Failure,Wheel Speed Sensor or some other issues

Parking brake light stays on.

Do you have a separate parking brake light and a "regular" brake light? Most vehicles only have one light, it illuminates when the parking brake is set, but it also illuminates when the system detects a failure anywhere in the brake system.

You could have a separate light for the anti-lock brake system (ABS ).

Your description of a light that is on till you apply the brakes is usually a sign of some sort of system brake failure. Start with brake fluid level, then inspect the brakes at each wheel, looking for a leak.

If nothing detected there, then you likely have something more serious. (Master brake cyclinder bad, possible something in the ABS brakes, etc.)

Others may disagree, but I would suggest not driving the vehicle (except to a mechanic) until this is corrected.

Abs light is on

There is a problem in the Antilock brake system and it has shut the ABS down. You will still have normal brakes just no ABS.

The 4WABS is self-monitoring. When the ignition switch is placed in the RUN position, the ABS module carries out a preliminary self-check on the anti-lock electrical system indicated by a 3-second illumination of the yellow ABS warning indicator in the instrument cluster.
If the vehicle is over 10,000 GVW, the warning indicator may remain on until the vehicle is driven at a speed above 15 mph for 10 seconds. Bringing the vehicle up to this speed enables a system self-check that turns the indicator off if no fault conditions are present.
A self-test of the solenoid valve coils and the pump motor is carried out when the vehicle is started. During starting, the brake pedal must be released to run the self-test. If the brake pedal is applied or a failed brake switch occurs, the self-test is run at 4 mph regardless of brake pedal position.
The system has 3 speed sensors, one on each front wheel and one in the rear end housing. The one in the rear end housing usually causes the problem. If any metal savings from the rear end gets on the end of it, this will cause this.
Best way to tell though is to have someone with a scan tool that will communicate with the ABS system pull the trouble codes.

2001 Mercury Grand Marquis brake and ABS dash lights on and off

The red brake light is the key here. That usually indicateds a hydraulic problem. Check you fluid level in master cylinder and see if it is low. Also the level indicator sensor there in the master cylinder maybe sticking or corrioded. If ABS sees the red brake light it will shut off and turn on the ABS light, also traction control would be disabled as well.

depending on the system if it is 2 channel or 4 channel one of the sensors that are located on the backing plate located behind calipers is eithier faulty or dirty you can try brake cleaner these sensors use a small magnet pickup device to sense when the wheel "locks up"
