Question about 1999 Volkswagen Golf
I have a 1999 TDI and since I bought it 2 years ago it the check engine light has been on,it doesn't get past 60 and it will sputter and kinda act like it isn't get gas but doesn't die just slows down. The person we got the car from insists that there is nothing wrong but there is obviously a big problem.I hope this sounds familar to you and you can help...Thanks!!
The only sensible way forward is to get a list of fault codes from the onboard diagnostic system and take it from there. You could either go to a VW dealer, or if you are technically minded you could buy a £15 interface cable, download some free "VAG diagnostic software" and run it on a portable computer.
In some circumstances the car will shut down to "limp mode" to get you home, but I don't think you would have put up with this for 2 years!
If these suggestions do help you solve the problem, please give my reply a rating to help others judge my knowledge / guessing skills.
If they do not, please hold off on the rating just now and add a comment with more details so I can try to help you further. Cheers, D
