Question about 1993 Ford Ranger SuperCab
WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM WITH MY 4X4 UNIT THE PUSH BUTTONS DO NOTHING.
I expierenced the same type of problem recently, I found through a process of elimination that the problem was in the electric shift motor assy. there is a bumper stop on the electrical switch portion of the shift motor, it was completely deterioated and gone. i don't know what type of material is was made of because all i found were shavings. I made a new bumper assy. out of a high quality piece of neopreme and slid it on, (tight fitting, with glue), and note it must be the correct size to operate the internal switching. I have had no trouble since and it seems to operate quieter and smoother than previously. I can't say this is your problem, but I do believe all of these bumpers are going to fail due to the material used in this application.

When you switch it from 2H to 4H you can push the switch at any speed but if you switch to 4L the car must be stop and the shifter is in neutral position.
Anyway here is my suggestion.... I would check the switch it self 1st for proper contact, also check the owners manual if there is a fuse for 4X4.
The worse scenario is the 4X4 computer is dead and if you have problem with transfer case you would notice a whining noise.
