99 pathfinder steering problem

Steering wheel shifts left and right while driving as if the car needs a wheel alignment but the car stays straight. The car has had three wheel alignments in the past month and the mechanics can't find the problem.

Steering wheel is not straight, and I have an appointment for getting a wheel alignment, and my question is that will the wheel alignment also fix my steering wheel to be back straight and normal ?

A wheel alignment will help if that is the only thing causing the car to go right. If you have hit something , like a curb it could have bent or broken something in the front end. The wheel should return to straight if the alignment is all that is needed.

There`s a big bolt on the driver side of the rack and pinion of my 99 chevy Silverado LS two wheel driver.. if I loosen it, will it free the wheels from the steering wheel so I can align them back

I strongly recommend getting it computer aligned. Your eyes are nowhere near as good as the sensors on one of those machines. You're talking fractions of a degree on some of those angles. They'll check out your front end free before they make adjustments. If the cops recovered the car and you can get the police report, submit it to your insurance.

When steering is centered the left wheel is out to the left and the right is straight

Unless you have had an accident or Kerbed the wheel it is probably your tracking is out/ track rod end loose!

Steering wheel not centred when driving in straight ahead.

2 ways to resolve. Take steering wheel off and recenter on spline ( done by dealer or auto electrician due to air bag) , or do a wheel alignment adjusting tie rod ends same distance as each other ie move both wheels left to right or vice versa.

I have a 92 accord and when I turn left or right the steering wheel does not come back to center but the car still tracks straight

So if when you are driving straight the steering wheel is not straight, you have an alignment problem. with the possability of damaged steering linkage. (if youve hit a curb or pothole lately) Either way take it to an alignment shop and they can fix it as well as tell you if anything is bent and needs replacing. should cost about 70 for alignment and 50-200 for parts.

1997 diesel suburban steering goes left

I doubt it's your 4x4. Most transfer case will start turning the front driveshaft, meaning that BOTH front wheels would try to turn.

Could be a brake pad/caliper locking up on your left wheel. That'll make that wheel turn slower resulting in the veering left.

Could also be a wheel bearing. However usually you'll hear a grinding noise to go along with that. And it'll pull rather consistently in that direction rather than suddenly.

Or, what first comes to mind is that your steering box is loose, or the gear inside the steering box is stripped in one spot. Or your front tie rods could be shifting or possibly ball joints. These would cause a sudden shifting/veering.

All of these things are front end related. And also very dangerous. Take it down to any alignment shop, have them put it on a lift, and diagnose immediately.

Worse case scenerio is that a front end part breaks and sends you out of control and into someone else. Please get it checked. A diesel Suburban could do a lot of damage.

98 pathfinder wobbling and steering wont stay straight

Honestly, I've done enough suspension work to know that your problem probably lies in the tie-rod ends. If the hole that the pivot shaft comes out of is even the slightest bit oblong, you'll experience major play in the wheel as well as your steering wheel not returning to the proper position. Whats more, if your tie-rod ends get too worn, the pivot shaft can actually separate from the tie-rod while you're going down the road, causing you to lose ALL steering capability...I've had this happen to me before, and believe me, it's NO FUN AT ALL!!! If the tie-rodends aren't the problem, then you've probably got an issue with a damaged control arm or sub-frame. Hope this helps!!!
