Question about 1996 Ford Bronco

2 Answers

Fuel sensor I had to replace the original gas tank on my 1996 full size Bronco. Since then the gas gauge fluctuates up to 3/4 of a tank at times. I've repaced the sending unit 3 times and they all do the same thing. Any ideas on what is causing them to fail?

The sensors all checked good before installing, then after filling the tank and running down to about 3/4 of a tank, it starts getting erractic, sometimes showing way over full. All three did exactly the same. I did not personally install them, it was done by a certified mechanic.

Hi,

Assuming the everything checkouts including the gauge or voltage divider on the dashboard/instrumentation, pls check the grounding strap or grounding connection of the tank and/or sending unit.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

That is an issue with the sensor fitted with the fuel pump.

If you have aleady changed the sensor, get an auto electrication to chk by shoting the two wire going to the sensor and chk the deflication in the gauge. if it shows a full deflection that mean the sensor has issue or is not postioned properly.

Why fuel gauge not working gas guage on 2009 santa fe stays on empty even with a full tank of gas. Guage fluctuates from empty to 3/4 full to empty to 1/3 full at any given time.

It could be the sending unit in the tank or the gauge on the dash. A mechanic would test the signal coming from the sending unit to verify.

Gas gauge reads full when underway. However, when

Most likely it a bad fuel level sensor on you fuel pump. You will have to replace the fuel pump as that is the only way to replace the sensor for you fuel gauge. The sensor is built into the fuel pump. The contacts on the sensor become corroded over time and cause the sensor to malfunction causing your fuel gauge to read full all the time. I have a 2001 Montana extended version that had the same problem. In order to know when I needed to fill the tank, I would completely fill it each time I put fuel in and reset my trip odometer. I would go 400 miles on the tank before I would refuel until we were able to replace the fuel pump.

1996 Ford Bronco Fuel Pump Replacement

A 1996 Bronco fuel pump is in the tank. The tank will have to be dropped. After that, it's quick & easy. The filter is on the rail, not so easy even with the line removal tools. Wear safety glasses in case of any pressure.

Check for timing gear problems. They have plastic teeth on the cam shaft gear which will shatter causing it to jump time.
