This is usually observed when there is improper grounding in the engine compartment. It can also be your injectors. For a detailed write up see here:

Why does my '88 Mercury Grand Marquis w/5.0 stall when put in gear?

I am thinking that the idle rpms are too low and the tune up is not good enough to compensate for the drop in rpms when the transmission is engaged
normal idle rpms on an automatic should be around 850rpms as they will drop 250rpms on gear selsction
any idle speed around 500 rpms will die when fear is engaged

That is a typical RPM at that speed for most 6-speed 4 cylinder engines. The reason for this is that they have a much lower power output at lower RPMs (due to lack of torque), and the engineers want for you to have SOME acceleration to get up little hills.

fuel pump sounds to be problem, though I'd replace air cleaner first to rule it out cheaper than pump (pump may have internal filters that are blocked)

if the ignitioin system is ok and not in need of replacing, I would venture that your catalytic converter is plugged. Had similar issues with a Chevy and that was it, when you drive for a few minutes, then pop the hood, will your exhaust manifold flash fry an egg? is it red hot? then replace the converter and have a nice day. this would also foul your O2 sensor.
