Question about 1996 Volvo 850

1996 Volvo 850 Starting problem

I have the above mentioned Volvo, and about a week ago, the check engine light came on. I took it to have a "generic" ODB test done and it threw an emissions code of some sort. They could not isolate the problem, however, with the code reader that was used. Neither here nor there, my problem is that today, my wife drove the car to my job, and when she went to leave, the car would not start! It will not even try to turn over. All of the dash lights work, its got a new battery and alternator, the headlights work, hell, even the open door chime was dinging. We even put a jump pack on it, just to make sure the battery wasn't low. When you turn the key to the start position, it just doesn't do anything! I can hear, what sounds like a relay clicking when the key is turned, but that's about it! Where do I need to start trying to isolate the problem? Starter, starter relay, or where? This is my very first Volvo, and I have no clue!! HEEEEEELLLLLLLLPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a problem with the anti-theft system; its partially tripped which locks out the ignition. Disconnect the negative lead on your battery and turn the key in the ignition. Nothing should happen, as you have no power, however turning the key will insure that all power has been drained from the system. Now reconnect the lead, unlock your doors twice, and start your car.

If the relay is clicking relay is ok.check central locking fuse #6 i beleaveif ok if its standard trans there is a switch on clutch pettal if it is automatic check safey nutral switch in shifter columm.
a quick way of finding out if its the starter is pull off the small wire on the side of the starter if the small wire gets power with a test light when working key swich its the starter.

the last one i done some while ago i had to remove the front bumper ,grill and rad to get access .took me the best part of half a day as the bolts were corroded up

Have a 1996 Volvo 850... left the light on and drained battery... nothing worked except that: I jumped car and noticed that alarm went off and I actually did the above and took neg. lead off then alarm...

sounds like you need a new battery, also have the alternater checked. as far as the alarm, you should be able to disarm the system by locking and unlocking the passengers door, then the drivers door with the key, when the door are closed

Reset check and service engine lights

It's in the console under the coin holder, in front of the gear shifter. You have to remove the coin holder and you will see it.

Inspection Time for my 1996 850 Volvo, but a problem here......

what are the problem codes that come back with the ck eng light and whats been done to fix the problem /a drive cycle can take up to 250 Miles and needs to have 35 mile non stop drives in that time

If the ABS light is on, it's probably the ABS controller. Try Victor Rocha at for help.

The shift lock sticking is probably the microswitch going/gone bad:

You also need to scan the computer for the check engine light. It may help illuminate the problem. Snort. :)

First, all these mechanics that you took your car to, did they have the full Volvo diagnostic software? In other words, were they able to access ALL computer systems that the lights were on for? If not, take your car to the Volvo dealer or a shop that has the proper software.
If the alternator does not charge or drops out while the engine is running, it will cause ALL the warning lights to come on.
Did you try adjusting the dash light dimmer control?
