Question about 2004 Chrysler Crossfire

Key won't turn in ignition

My key and spare won't turn in ignition, only after quite a few tries and tapping on the key as I am attempting to turn it. key wont turn on easily. After trying for a couple minutes sometimes I can get it to turn on by wiggling the wheel and really turning the key hard. You can hear a snap and I'm afraid I'll break my key off sometime. Does my lock cylinder need to be replaced? Only have 30k miles on my 2004 crossfire

Last year at 25,000km the key/steering wheel had to be moved together, to get the ignition key to turn. This became chronic, and under warranty the cylinder lock was replaced (approx. $400).

(and one year and a few weeks) Thru this year we had to still giggle occasionally. Presently (1-year a& a few weeks from the service), and after only 6,000km, the key cannot be turned at all.

Chrysler says the ignition lock (A) and steering column parts (B) now have to be replaced (approx. $2,000), outside of the one year service warranty.

Chrysler says that they (A & B) are unrelated and both did not have to be replaced last year. A separate service manager told me that if both A & B were replaced last year, there would be no problem this year. Furthermore, B must have been faulty last year, though good enough to work with a new cylinder only. Clearly, under warranty, Chrysler elects to do as little as possible, but is that enough for an issue of this nature.

Can you comment on the technicality of replacing both A & B at the same time last year as proper service procedure...is the servicing dealer of last year negligent, in your opinion.

The lock cylinder in the steering column has to be changed. I have see these wear out.

To avoid having a new key combination for the ignition, when you go to the dealer and order new part, tell them that you want to have it in the same combination code as the original. You will have to loan them a copy of the key to have this done.

The last step is you will need someone who knows how to change the cylinder in the steering column. In many models of cars, this is an involved job.

I also have a 2004 crossfire. If you don't know this already the crossfire keying in the ingition is awkward. Put the key in slightly and twist it completely to the left then push it into the ignition and turn it all the way to the right to turn it on. It took me a long time to get use to it but apparently this is how most if not all crossfires are designed to be turned over. Hope this helps.

Ignition problems

If the key won't turn in the ignition barrel, it could be as simple as the key is worn. If you have a spare key try that first.

2001 ford taurus key won't turn ignition

The steering wheel was turned when the key was removed. So when you try to turn on the key, turn the wheel one way and the other way to release the pressure on the key. The key should turn ok.
Hope this helps.

Key won.t turn in the ingition

Hi there:The most likely cause will be the ignition key cylinder. Its fairly common for this to happen over time. There are a few items you can try to see if you can get the key to turn so that you can drive it to a repair shop and have the key cylinder replaced. First step is to try wiggling the key alot......this is the most common method that works for me. Wiggle it up and down and see if it eventually turns. The next step is to blow the key cylinder hole out with compressed air......not air in a can that you use to blow your key board off with. You need something with some good strong air pressure. Then if this doesnt work then you can try the bump method. With the key in the ignition.....tap on the end of it while wiggling the key and trying to turn it. Tap it with some force but just not too much so as to not cause any damage. If this doesnt work that chances are that you may have to have the vehicle towed to a repair shop of have a Lock smith come out and attempt the repair. Also make sure to use another key if avail to make sure no problems with the key itself.
As mentioned, the key cylinder is the most likely cause for this concern. Also make sure the steering is not in a bind, try moving the steering hard in either direction while turning the key to see if any change.
Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

sounds like either the key or the lock cylinder is worn out
if you have a spare key try it
if it wont turn it you need a new lock cylinder with new keys

Ignition locked in off position

If the key is stuck in the ignition and won't allow you to turn the cylinder to "On" or "Start" you can try gently and rapidly tapping on the end of the key [with something like a light screwdriver handle] while applying gentle turning pressure on the key. Often the tumblers in the cylinder get dirty or are damaged and this trick will sometimes get the thing to work a few times more. Hope this helps and good luck!
