Michael is correct on replacing water pump but if you are mech. inclined it can be done by removing upper fan shroud and serp. belt only. leave fan on pump until removed. remove 4 15mill bolts and the whole assembly. apply gasket sealer to both sides of gasket and insert 2 upper bolts to keep gasket in place when reinstalling.I have a 1998 gmc and did this a couple days ago while installing injection spider.
TO REPLACE WATER PUMP.REMOVE THE RADIATOR SHROUD HALVES.REMOVE FAN CLUTCH AND FAN.YOU NEED FAN CLUTCH WRENCH AND A FAN CLUTCH PULLEY HOLDER.YOU CAN RENT TOOLS AT AUTO ZONE OR BUY THEM AT A AUTO PARTS STORE.THE FAN CLUTCH BOLTS ARE LEFT HAND THREAD. REMOVE THEM BY TURNING CLOCKWISE.BEFORE INSTALLING NEW WATER PUMP COAT BOTH SIDES OF WATER PUMP GASKET WITH GASKET SEALER.TORQUE WATER PUMP BOLTS 18 FT LBS.
Pretty easy. Just drain antifreeze. Then loosen 4 bolts that holds fan to pulley. Remove plastic fan schroud and fan pulley. Loosen water pump bolts in criss cross pattern and remove water pump. Clean surface install new gasket and water pump install in reverse order. Tighten in staggerd order to keep from breaking and warping. Don't forget to change thermostat good time to replace. Part should be about 50 bucs at your local parts store.
there are four nuts that you must remove at the front of the pulley between the fan. remove fan, fan shroud, loosen accessory belts. remove water pump pulley and the pump bolts will be exposed. check belts for replacement while you have them loose. reverse procedure to install.

DO NOT use cooling system seal tabs (or similar compounds) unless
otherwise instructed. The use of cooling system seal tabs (or similar
compounds) may restrict coolant flow through the passages of the
cooling system or the engine components. Restricted coolant flow may
cause engine overheating and/or damage to the cooling system or the
engine components/assembly. Install or connect the following:
Water pump. Install the water pump bolts. Tighten the water pump
bolts first pass to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm); tighten the bolts final pass
to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).Water pump drive belt pulley and bolts (if applicable). Tighten
the pulley bolts first pass to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm); tighten the bolts
final pass to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).Surge tank hoseHeater hoseOutlet radiator hose to the coolant pumpDrive beltCooling fan and clutch assemblyUpper fan shroudInlet radiator hose to the water pumpAir inlet ductCoolant
remove belt drain radiator remove fan shroud remove fan /pulley remove top hose on water pump and lower hose un bolt water pump remember mark bolts because lower longer need sealant due to they go into water jacket remove and clean around both water openings before setting in place hook up upper bypass hose easier to hook up before install--replace and rebolt everything
drain engine coolant.relieve belt tension .and remove the drive belt.remove upper fan shroud.remove fan or fan and clutch assembly.remove water pump pulley and coolant hoses from water pump.remove water pump bolts.then remove pump from engine.pay attention to bolts location because they are different lenghts.clean water pump gasket mounting surface dont scratch .or pump gasket wont seal and leak .apply sealant to water pump bolts.install water pump with new gasket.if gasket paper put a sealant on it.torque water pump bolts to 30 ft lbs.if you got a 2.2L engine torque water pump bolts to 18 ft lbs.install coolant hoses on pump .install water pump pulley.install fan and fan clutch assembly.install the drive belt .and the upper fan shroud.fill the radiator with coolant.then run engine to check for leaks.WARNING AS A SAFETY PRECAUTION REMOVE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE SO CAR WONT BE CRANK BY ACCIDENT. ALSOOOO DONT FORGET TO TURN OFF RADIO FIRST BEFORE DISCONNECTING BATTERY SO YOU WONT LOSE YOUR RADIO CODE.
