Question about 1984 Volvo 240 Series

Stalling of 85 volvo GL

I have an 85 Volvo GL with 76,000 miles on it. Just recently, it didn't pass the smog, so I had the catayltic converter fixed and it passed, but now the car is having problems. While driving, especially at low speeds or coming to a stop, the car will just turn off. Sometimes I can restart, and sometimes I cannot. I will have a wait a few minutes for the gauges to go down, and then restart. It's been a hit or miss. I can tell when the car is about to stall, it starts to get jerky so I've been lucky to pull over. I've taken it to mechanic shop and they have had a hard time locating the problem. First, they replaced the ignition coil, and thought it was fine. I took it out of the shop, and it still stalled. Then they found the distributer didn't have sparks, so I've had that replaced. I took it out and it still stalled. Seems to only stall when I'm driving. The shop suggested that I take it to the dealer, and they haven't found a problem either. They said that what I've described sounds like the fuel pumps may be going out. Is it worth replacing if isn't a guarantee? Also, they suggest to replace the fuel relay as well. The dealership has had it for the last week, and they've been driving it on and off hoping to catch it dying, but haven't. I'm trying to figure out if I should replace it or just give up on the car. Any advice.

    I have a similar problem with my 1984 240 gl volvo, but mine will stall even while going at 110 km/h. I have replaced the fuel filter

    I have this problem too while driving. Mine acts up after the car is warm, it's like a loss of power first then a stall out. Sometime I can pull over and restart the car and it will be fine, usually it will start and only let me go about 20 mph so I can limp it into a safe parking area. I'm checking my vacuum hoses. I already replaced both the in tank and booster fuel pumps and the fuel relay. I have a sneaky suspicion it's my ignition wiring harness but I have not found a replacement yet.

    A overlooked problem with 240 older models rough running,cracked inner rubber insulators on spark plug leads with metal caps. They seem to act up after engine is warmed up. they could lead to miss firing but may not a complete stall.

Check for broken, damaged or stiff wires between the ECU to coil & ECU to hall effect in dissy.
If your not technical get Auto Electrician to wiggle the wiring looms while engine is running & maybe you will find it.

Stalling problems with 1994 volvo turbo won't go pass 30 miles.


Sounds like the fuel filter is dirty... When have you replaced it last? Possible that the pump is bad but I would start with the filter.

I have a 1998 saturn Sl-1. It has about 200,000 miles on it. Is there any hope for passing the smog test. If not about how much should I set aside for repair? How about for my Husband's 2003 Allero?


Sure is. 200,000 isn't a ton of miles on these cars. As long as the maintenance has been kept up and regular items have been changed over the life of the car then you shouldn't have a problem. Sometimes though at this age the catayltic converter may become clogged but this is usually preceded by bogging down under acceleration and other power problems.

85 volvo dl fuel evaporative control functional (failed) @ smog check


replace the pvc valve and have the egr valve replace.make sure the vacuum hoses connect to egr valve and pvc replace.change air filter.all those things will cause high emission if not working properly.cause you to fail smog test.

My 1985 Volvo GL station wagon won't pass smog the smog inspector said its probably the catalytic converter. How much on average does that cost to replace?


Since you did not post the engine size of your GL

My answer is base on a

GL L4 2.3 Liter L4 2.3 Liter engine.


The catalytic converter will cost you $181 if your car has California Emission system.

$248 for Fed. emission system.

Gaskets will cost you under $25

Look at the sticker under the hood or the inner fender for more information.

Labor is under 2 hours.

Shop around will save you money.

95 volvo 940 DL hesitates injector error codes 113, 212, 232


Check the fuse to the injector. If it is out or got wet, it could mimic these conditions. let me know what happens. I have an 85 model.

Change the the O2 senor on the catalytic convert. Its probably dead.

code p2404 is from a none volvo tester it would convert over to volvo code ecm 432a ,leak diag. pump failure,now dont play with it driving should be ok but you should take it to the dealer or a volvo only shop and read codes and fix it when your ready
