Question about 1996 Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

Unexplained problem Our 1996 dodge caravan has recently been having this wierd problem. Twice it's happened now. It will start sputtering and jerking. My husband has tightened these wires under hood the first time. Some of them were barely hanging on. Well, we assumed this was the reason for the first time, but it happened again while I was on the interstate with the cruise on. My pedal went all the way down to the floor. So, I turned off the cruise and made it to side of interstate. Both times as i am reving the engine it barely wants to cooperate and then dies. Any ideas?

I had a similar problem with mine but at differing speeds from idle to cruise. It would totally shut off or stutter and it was totally unpredictable. Had a similar problem with an '86 F-150. Went to the junk yard and picked up a MAP sensor for ten bucks just to troubleshoot. Problem solved. It's just two small hex head screws on top of the throttle and easy to access.

1998 dodge caravan keeps dying but starts right back up

I'd start by replacing the fuel filter, if it hasn't been replaced recently, that might be the cheapest fix, if that doesn't solve it, it sounds like a fuel pump, have the pressure coming out of it checked before dropping the fuel tank to get to it.

I get code 51 on 1996 dodge caravan....fuel system lean---a lean air/fuel mixture has been indicated by an abnormally rich correction factor. The van runs fine when engine is cold but will sputter and...

the code is telling you where the problem is. Try replacing the HO2S sensors as the cpu is having trouble keeping the air /fuel mixture within limits. Check the cat converter for cracks or blockages . Have a pressure test done on the fuel manifold to check for pump/filter and pressure regulator problems. Check the ambient air temp sensor and coolant temp sensor as they also affect the air/fuel mixture.

1996 dodge caravan wont start after fuel pump change

you need to check the fuel pressure to make sure it is holding the proper pressure. If not, you have a bad regulator. If so then check the injectors to make sure they are all spraying

Have replaced TPS twice. Take it apart put it back to gether runs fine for a will then later sputters and jerks. I think it may be a wire problem. But right now the engine wont start. when it does run...

mcdevito75 here, The unfortunate fact is, ----- the engines sensors can go out just like light bulb, you can install a brand new sensor and it could go out very fast, specially with all the after market brands. I would bring the car to a shop in your area for a computer read out and a new TPS of their brand.

Check MAP sensor. If PCM gets wrong data from MAP sensor it should offset ignition timing and/or make fuel mixture too lean or too rich.
