Question about 1997 Ford F250 SuperCab

Brakes f250 2 wheel drive

I had a full brake job done on my 1997 f250 light duty including replacing the front rotors, calipers, pads, etc at a goodyear tire service. since that time the left front caliper will builds up pressure in the line and rubs the rotor causing excessive brake dust, loss of gas mileage, and pulls to the left. I opened bleed screw on left and released excess pressure and is fine for a while but slowly builds up again. have replaced caliper 3 times and still has same problem. Very noticeable difference in fuel economy. I have replaced the brake line from the calliper to the diverter valve as I was told the mechanic that did the brake job used vise grips to shut off the brake line while disconnected from caliper and damaged it causing brake fluid to build up pressure in line like a one way valve. This did not stop the problem. I suspect that he reused old fluid that was contaminated and has got a piece of contaminant in diverter valve that will not let it work properly letting fluid go back to master cylinder when you release the brake pedal. everyone I ask about this shakes their head and just suggests that I replace everything from the master cyl to the brake pads, this would be rather costly. any suggestions?

    My inner drivers side pad wears out twice as fast as the other. I have tried everything but the correct solution to this major pain. Is it time to junk the truck or is there a master mechanic out there with a solution.???? Thanks in advance before I have to replace any more rotors.

Hello i think you should have the system power bleed with a power bleeder theres a good chance the plunger in the proportioning valve is sticking if you have this truck power bleed it will push out the old fluid replacing with new usually if theres any type of contaminates especially oil ,or power stewering put into master by mistake it would swell any rubber piece to the point of a hard pedal and nothing working then you would have to replace everthing like your being told the only thing you could still use would be the lines wich would have to be cleaned with denature alcahol i would have it bleed in sequence firthest tire down to the closest to the master goodluck

yes baby it to him and replace both calipers and rotors as they will work better with your new brake pads. Do Not Do a half a job when it comes to brakes. its your family you are dealing with. calipers are cheap rotors are cheaper and pads are also cheap. its 3 hours labour to do a complete front brake job and rear brakes take 2 hours. with new shoes turn drums replace wheel cylinders and new rear brake hardware price in Canadian for front brakes under 400 price for rear under 250 American parts prices slightly different but labour times the same

Front brake
Step 1: Identify Front Disc Brake Components

Most front disc brake components include: brake rotor, brake pads, brake caliper, caliper mount and brake flex hose. Brake service usual occurs between 20,000 and 40,000 miles depending on driver habits, road conditions and brake pad/ rotor materials used.
Step 2: Remove Brake Caliper to Replace Pads

Locate primary caliper mounting bolts; apply wrench pressure counter-clockwise (When looking at the head of the bolt) to remove the bolts, upper and lower. Make sure the bolt threads are in good shape and replace if necessary.
Step 3: Remove Front Brake Caliper

After removing the primary caliper mounting bolts lift the brake caliper off of the rotor and then tie or secure to the side, being careful not to bend or kink the brake caliper flex hose. Thoroughly inspect brake caliper and brake hoses for leakage, cracks or chaffing and replace as needed. Next remove the brake pads (If not mounted in the caliper) and secondary caliper mounting bolts. Notice how great protective gloves work, most technicians use them on the job today.
Step 4: Remove Brake Pads

Once the brake pads have been removed, make sure if there is anti rattle hardware to transfer to the new brake pads. Some brake pad manufacturers will include the proper lube (Caliper slides) and anti-rattle hardware to ensure proper performance of their product.
Step 5: Remove Caliper Mount

Finish removing secondary caliper mount bolts and remove caliper mount. Note: clean and lube caliper slides and pad friction surfaces of all foreign material or build-up.
Step 6: Remove Brake Rotor

With the caliper mount out of the way you can now remove the brake rotor. Sometimes it can get stuck so you may need to tap it with a hammer or use penetrating oil to free it up. Some manufacturers use small screws to hold the rotor on as well. Clean and inspect wheel studs, replace if any are damaged. Also clean bearing hub rotor mount surface to ensure the proper mounting of the new brake rotor. Inspect the ABS sensor wheel for cracks or damage and replace as needed.
Step 7: Depressing the Brake Caliper

Resetting Brake Caliper
To install the new brake pads you must retract the brake caliper piston. Remove the master cylinder lid or open the brake caliper bleeder screw to allow excess brake fluid to be released if necessary. Install C clamp tool and gently tighten clamp until caliper piston is fully depressed. Note: use old brake pad to protect the caliper piston. Close the bleeders once the piston is retracted completely
Step 8: Installing New Brake Rotor

Install new brake rotor, the new rotor is manufactured with a protective film over the rotor to keep it from rusting, remove protective film with brake cleaner before installing; also after the brake job is complete you may experience a small amount of smoke from the rotor when first used. This is normal and will go away after the first couple of uses.
Step 9: Installing New Front Brake Pads

Reinstall the front brake caliper mount, and then install front brake pads. Make sure the pads are seated properly in the caliper mount; it must be a close fit to work properly..
Step 10: Reinstall Front Brake Caliper

Reinstall front brake caliper and reinstall caliper-mounting bolts, recheck all mounts and mounting bolts. Check the caliper slides to be sure there is no bind and that the caliper moves freely back and forth on the caliper slides. Bleed brake system per manufacturer's specifications to relieve any air trapped in the system. Before driving the vehicle, push the brake pedal down and let it up slowly, repeat until normal brake pedal operation resumes, this operation is forcing the brake pads to travel to the brake rotors.

How do I change front brakes on this vehicle?


Your model is not to involved with special needs or tools...The brake pads are exposed when you remove the front caliper...this is accomplished by removing the 2 mounting bolts completely, then lift the caliper off of the rotor...be sure to hang the caliper on a strut spring or something to keep it from falling or damaging the brake line...you can pull off the rotors on this model after removing the caliper...You need to push the pistons all the way in to use the new pads...channel locks can do this. I recommend that you include replacing the rotors as this will assure the smooth new operation of pads and rotors...the rotors are inexpensive at about $20-$25...use all lubricants in re-assembling the calipers, and grease your wheel studs for weather-proofing and future service. SPECIAL NOTE: After completion pump the brakes before driving...do not be surprised that the pedal initially goes to the floor...keep pumping to restore...check fluid in master cyclinder to be sure still full...congratulations on replacing your own brake parts and saving $$$$

General directions on how to change the front brakes on a Toyota Supra, 1987.


Buy brake pads.
loosen lugs
Jack car, place on jack stand
turn wheel so front of tire is pointing out.
remove tire
remove caliper (two bolts on back side of caliper
slide caliper off rotor.
(if rotor is damaged, see about having it turned or replaced)
take pads off caliper
open hood and remove cap to mater cylinder reservoir
using special tool (or C-clamp and something to protect piston) push the piston back into the caliper fully.
place new brake pads on caliper.
fit caliper on the rotor
Secure caliper to wheel with bolts
replace wheel
remove jack stand
remove jack
tighten lugs on wheel
replace hubcap
start engine (do not drive yet!!!!!)
pump brake pedal until it tightens up
observe reservoir on master cylinder (fill if needed)
replace cap
pump brakes again
take out for a test drive.

How do I replace my front brake pads on my ford f-250 2004


I describe this for a Ranger, but it is similar for your machine
It is pretty straight forward. The Ranger has front disc brakes.
If possible spray everything with brake cleaner to reduce asbestos dust as you work on the brakes. Best not to breathe in any of the nasty debris on the brakes and caliper. If I have them I wear nitril gloves for less mess on the hands.
Take the wheel off. The caliper holds the brake pads. On mine it is two large allen bolts at the inside of the caliper to take it off. You don't have to remove both allen bolts--take off one and then loosen the other. The caliper can then be rotated off the rotor. Now you can remove the rotor--it may have a screw holding it on still--remove that and pull it off the wheel hub.(Sometimes they can be stuck on, but they pretty much are just hanging onto the wheel hub studs) Do one at a time and then if you have any issues, look at the other one. The brake pads themselves kind of snap into place in the caliper. Remove the old ones noting any orientation issues and any shims--some of them come with thin plate shims that fit behind them. When you are ready to replace the pads, you need to use a clamp to drive the caliper piston back so that the pads on the cliper will fit onto the new rotor when they are rotated back. Make sure the bolts on the caliper are tight.
You may want to have the rotors turned--machined flat again--or buy new ones--you can always turn your old ones for next time too.
There rear are less essential since most of the stopping is from the front--let me know if this helps- to push my rating u

...full job would include loaded calipers with all new hardware ..if you pay attention to disassembly you will not need a service manual necessarly..all is logical and straightforward...but you are dealing with safety so be sure you are good before taking a drive ...good luck

Front brake pads for 1997 ford ecscort encore


The binding of the brakes is causing the pads to overheat, which is causing the smoke. You need pull the wheel and check things out. Your caliper must be bad (not releasing). You need to replace the caliper, brake pads, and have the rotor cut (a full service parts store or shop cuts the rotor perfectly smooth on both sides), or replaced (it may be cheaper to just buy a new rotor). You should also always change the pads (and check everything else) on the opposite side. So, if u do the brakes on the driver side front, always do the front pass. side at the same time, likewise if u do rear brakes.
Whenever you do brakes u should also flush out the brake lines (by bleeding the brakes) until the brake fluid flows absolutely clear. Old brake fluid is the #1 reason for caliper failure. I've seen many times people replace brake components w/out changing the brake fluid, only to have the brakes wear out very quickly, or not function properly. good luck! hope this helps> please rate this!couontrycurt0

Its has to come of from the back. Is a 45 min job in at the dealer, so it is a big job. All the bolts for taking it off are in the back,plus you have to take every thing of thats in the way, tire rod end, etc.
