Hi these boxes tended to be a bit noisey anyway but a simple test for the release bearing and first motion shaft is easy first make sure g/box oil level is ok
start engine ,take your foot off the clutch peddle compleatly you have a whine, put your foot on the peddleVERYlightlynoise should change ,if the noise is more of a rattle than a whine it is coming from the clutch release bearing if it a definate whine it is either the spigot bearing in the flywheel or the first motion shaft

Car shifts but gears do not engage

It sounds like you have a clutch problem, this is what happens when your clutch is no more, You may have noticed it getting sluggish for some time or lots of motor and not much acceleration. If this sounds familar, get your clutch checked. When it gives up, you are not going anywhere.

Transmission engages but does not drive and makes a whineing noise when in park

Toyota 4 Runner has either auto transmission or manual transmission. If it is auto trans, it could be due to the following reasons:
1.Wrong grading and classification of transmission oil. (ATF Dexron II).
2. Clogged transmission filter. (Clean or replace)
3. Worn out clutch friction discs and pressure plates. (replace)
4. Broken fly wheel and/or torque converter. (replace)
5. Check transmission control knobs and switches for if they are at their actual position where they are supposed to be.

Gears in 1990 Toyota 4 runner grinding and not engaging

I'm assuming it's manual, check your clutch slave cyl level. You may be low on fluid. If you check the slave cyl and it has good travel and decent pressure your transmission will need to be removed to inspect clutch

On my 99 camry 2.2 4 cyl my clutch pedal catches all the way out. Is it possible to adjust it so it catches farther in?

Yes, there is an adjustment that would have the effect of shifting the point at which the clutch engages, BUT, that would not correct what appears to be your problem. As the clutch wears, the point at which it engages shifts, moving further outward until it will slip even though the pedal is completely out. I suspect that your clutch is nearing its end of life.Toyotas are such reliable beasts however, it would make sense to replace the clutch. I replaced mine at 212,000 miles, and in now has 289,500 miles and is still going strong. Hope this helps. Dano

AC doesn't blow cold air on 95 4 runner. Can I check compressor

Well, for one with the truck idling, the RPMs should increase every time that the clutch on the compressor engages. You should be able to see it engage and disengage and the RPMs will change accordingly. If this isn't happening then you need to determine why. Have the A/C blower on low when doing this.

It sounds like the electric motor for the 4 wheel drive may not be engaging. It could also be the magnetic clutch for the 4 wheel drive may not be working. This sounds like an electrical problem.
