I have a 96 sl saturn. takes half an hour for my car to reach running temp. When i start driving the engine cools down so far, to the point i have no hot air for my heater. I replaced the thermastat, i flushed the engine and radiator, but my car still will not reach normal running temp. And my cooling fan doesn't work, even during the summer time the engine runs very cool, even when i sit in traffic, so i never bothered to fix it. any ideas why my engine won't run hot??

Oh thats not nice to say joking did you replace the rad cap as well and the water pump circulates properly it sounds like a headgasket problem but if you are sure you put in a high temp thermostat and the prestone is new and heater hoses are hot showing good circulation the problem could be in the car heater controls or vents so double check to be sure cap prestone thermo and circulation are all good test head gasket

Replace the thermostant again this time get a hotter temp thermostant and buy it from the dealer, the other thing is that these cars are known for the temp sensors being bad this would give you the false reading on the gauge but would not affect the heat, if its taaking a long time then i would replace the stant and this time or before replacing the stant i want you to flush out the heater core, remove the hoses from the heatercore and use a water hose to flush water through the heater core, a plugged core will not throw heat or will start to allow water to flow when it gets good and hot to flow through the retricted core due to rust and crud, try the flush first and then try a new temp sensor if the flush helps the heat, hope this is helpful good luck.

Yes i have2002 saturnsl 1.9 i have replace fuel pump, fuel filter, temp. sensor it will run until the heat gauge reaches 1/4 and it just dies when cools back down starts up does it again.

the m.a.f. sensor and oxegen sensors start working when the engine get warmed up to normal and they adjust the air fuel mixure.

1998 Saturn SL Overheated, then died. very little steam or smoke. No clunk, or grinding noise, but now wont start. Let it cool and filled coolant resevoir it was low. Oddly had to put in 2 qt of oil...

There's a few possibilities of what might have happened. If the motor got hot enough to warp the cylinder head then the head gasket could have failed between two or more cylinders which would allow the engine to crank over quite freely but not start. The 1.9L engine has a timing chain which rarely fails so I doubt if you have any problems there. A compression test and a cooling system pressure check should be done to see where the problem is and what kind of damage has been done. Engines with aluminum heads don't tolerate much overheating and warp quite easily once they reach a certain temp.

1999 Saturn SL Getting Hot When Stopped

Check your electric cooling fan is cutting in when stationary. Air flowing through your radiator whilst driving keeps your engine cool. There is no airflow when stationary, so cooling fan is used to compensate, sounds like yours isnt working.

Radiator cooling fan does not turn on on my 1994 saturn sl, car will overheat in city driving fan does work

If you have an A/C turn it on and the fan should run, if it doesn't run at this point you can try to turn it manually with the engine OFF. If it is stiff, there is a good chance the fan is bad. Another way to test it is to take the connector off of the coolant temp sensor and take a small paper clip with ignition in on position, but engine off and jump the two points together. If the fan kicks on at this point it is good and we just proved that the Computer recognized the CTS. If all of this passes the CTS could be bad or the connector that you just tested could be bad. That is a problem with Saturn's. If you decide that you want to replace the CST "do not buy an after market" Buy from Saturn on that part and of course if you replace the connector...that will be the only place you will get that, but the reason you don't buy an aftermarket CST is the computer doesn't recognize it and you will find your fan not coming on again when it gets hot.

Cooling fan won't come on unless you turn the a/c on, then i turn the a/c off the cooling fan cycles normaly but will not cycle back on.

the fan turn on point on this model comes on at a very high temp gauge reading..not far from red or about 3/4 ways up...the engine will run quite a while before reaching this level. It should never go into the red which indicates problems but the design of the system gets it uncomfortably close. I've seen these needing to idle for 10 mins or so before the engine temp reaches the fan turn on point. One good thing about this design is when the fan does come on ,one should see immediate and noticeable drop below half in just a minute or two which indicates a good operating cooling system.

1990 Subaru Liberty Overheats

Hi,

I had the same problem with my 1993 Liberty LX. Remove the thermostat (located inside bottom radiator hose engine connection - take the connection off and thermostat is inside). Reassemble (minus thermostat), reconnect bottom hose. Slowly (very, very slowly) refill the radiator and remove the bleed plug ( located beside the top hose connection to the radiator - a black square plug with a phillips head cross in the middle). When the radiator is full and clear water (no air bubbles) is coming out of the bleed point, replace the bleed plug and then the radiator cap.

Run the engine for five minutes (approx) or until normal engine temperature is reached. Allow the engine to cool down and recheck the water level - fill if necessary ensuring that the bleed plug is open and clear water is coming out of that point. Replace Bleed plug and then radiator cap. Run engine for five minutes (approx) and then test dive. If the engine overheats keep filling the radiator until there are no air bubbles coming from out of the bleed point.

This fixed my overheating problem. Good luck and safe motoring.
