Apply the brake and put the car into park before trying to re-start. Won't start in drive.

THE FIRE COULD SPREAD TO THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR, WHICH COULD INJURE OCCUPANTS OR CAUSE DAMAGE TO ADJOINING STRUCTURES. Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A RELAY KIT IN THESE VEHICLES TO PREVENT HIGH CURRENT FROM FLOWING THROUGH THE IGNITION SWITCH, AND CHECK THAT YOUR CAR WILL START WITH A PROPERLY CHARGED BATTERY AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH. You could have a bad alternator and are running off the battery voltage. This is just one possibility tho.

2003 pontiac sunfire, key in ignition nothing. tried jumping, nothing. Left for help, came back car started right up 4 or 5 times, Now nothing. Why? ty, Sue

Sounds like a short in the ignition switch. Next time it does it, try shaking and turning the steering wheel while you're turning the key to start. If this doesn't work, try cycling the switch on and off several times. Chances are, this is your problem.

Car starts run's 3 seconds shuts down

Your car is equipped with a system called PASSKEY standard on all GM cars and light trucks, try the following procedure to reset the system, the battery being dead will trigger the system.

PASSKEY LOCKOUT RESET GM CARS 1999 UP
1) Put the key in the ignition and turn to the "ON" position. Leave it that way for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes turn the key and take it out. Repeat this process (2) more times (3 times, 30 minutes total) This should reset the passlock system to recognize your key.
