There should be an actuator inside the center console by the shifter. the part may need to be replaced. I had a similar problem in a 2001 Escort.

How many quarts does a 92 chev silverado transmission take

I looked at info for 92 chevy c1500 pickup--5.7L engine, automatic. My database on that model year, won't say, Silverado.
I'm not a tranny person, I doubt you can totally drain the tranny and the torque converter has fluid. I don't like to change tranny fluid on older vehicles, I've seen too many people have problems. If the specs aren't correct, blame the database, not me. Keep an eye on your tranny dip stick.

96 taurus ax4n tranny

You might need to replace the valve body clip with the upgraded (stronger) one. Ford had problems for a while with the clip breaking and not allowing the tranny to shift into O/D. I had the no O/D problem, I replaced the clip with the upgraded (stronger) one which fixed the problem.

92 taurus GL lost upper gears

Hi, from your description, it sounds as though you have a valve body problem in the transmission. Burnt fluid could possibility mean deterioration of the clutch packs, which would shed material and then that material would be lodged in the super fine clearances of the valve body.

I would bet that is the oil pan of the transmission were removed, one would find a lot of foreign debris, indicating the demise of the transmission.

If you would like to correspond further with me on this or any other issue, please feel free to do so.

My car doesn't change gears, it's runing in hght gear only.

you need to get a new transmission control module, i had the same problem when i bought my 92 from the auction, i wouldn't shift from 1st to 2nd, so i found a rebuilt unit on the internet and it corrected the problem, you also might want to remove the excess tranny fluid that every one put's in when they have a tranny problem.
