It is called theIntake Manifold Runner Control actuator. (IMRC) Depending on what type of upper intake you have, you may or may not have to take the upper plenum off to access the actuator. Just unplug it and take out the 2 bolts that hold it on. Hope this helps.

There are three basic types of intake air sub-systems:

  • Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) electric actuated system

  • Intake Manifold Swirl Control (IMSC) vacuum actuated system

  • Intake Manifold Tuning Valve (IMTV)

These subsystems are used to provide increased intake airflow to improve torque, emissions and performance. The overall quantity of air metered to the engine is controlled by the throttle body.

Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) Electric Actuated System
The Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) Electric Actuated system (Figure 107) consists of a remote mounted motorized actuator with an attaching cable for each housing on each bank. Some applications will use one cable for both banks. The cable or linkage attaches to the housing butterfly plate levers. The 2.0L (2V) Focus IMRC uses a motorized actuator mounted directly to a single housing without the use of a cable. Each IMRC housing is an aluminum casting with two intake air passages for each cylinder. One passage is always open and the other is opened and closed with a butterfly valve plate. The housing uses a return spring to hold the butterfly valve plates closed. The motorized actuator houses an internal switch or switches, depending on the application, to provide feedback to the PCM indicating cable and butterfly valve plate position.

Below approximately 3000 rpm, the motorized actuator will not be energized. This will allow the cable to fully extend and the butterfly valve plates to remain closed. Above approximately 3000 rpm, the motorized actuator will be energized. The attaching cable will pull the butterfly valve plates into the open position. Some vehicles will activate the IMRC near 1500 rpm.


  1. The PCM uses the TP sensor and CKP signals to determine activation of the IMRC system. There must be a positive change in voltage from the TP sensor along with the increase in rpm to open the valve plates.

  1. The PCM uses the information from the input signals to control the IMRC motorized actuator based upon rpm and changes in throttle position.

  1. The PCM energizes the actuator to pull the butterfly plates open with the cable(s) or linkage.

  1. The IMRC housing contains butterfly plates to allow increased air flow.

Ok i have a check engine light on that says intake manafold runner stuck open does anyone know how to close that. thank you

Some of the designs used actuator pods that worked on Vacuum. There were plastic clips that held the rod from the Vacuum pod to the manifold runner. If this clip broke you would lose control of the runner.

These runners will soot up and stick if other factors combined to dirty the passages. Ford does make combustion chamber cleaner and other cleaning products. They would be most compatible, some electric controls can be damaged if the wrong chemical is used.

Taking the intake off and cleaning the stuck runners would be the most dependable cure.

Intake manifold runner stuck open

Need to be more (way more) specific. An intake man. is a one piece, aluminum device, with "runners" going into the head where your intake valves are operating open and closed to allow the engine to run. Nothing on the intake opens or closes, or moves in any way. The big butterfly valve at the opening of the intake(part of your throttle body, where the air comes in), Is this what is stuck open? It's controlled by your accelerator linkage, and a spring to bring it closed. Spray with carb. cleaner, reach in as far as possible with a rag to clean it as much as you can, and work it back and forth to free it up, if it's stuck.

Where is the IMRC (INTAKE MANIFUL RUNNER CONTROL) on a 2001 Ford Mustang.. Got code P1518.. Had a fuel injection cleaner done, but service engine light is still on.. So Want to check it out. Thanks

Hello, First the Service light has to be cleared from the computer by a scanner or by disconnecting the NEG battery cable for 10 minutes. The scanner is a better idea because some radios and antithefts can act up when the NEG connection is open.

If you still have a problem and have the 3.8L V-6 engine for the 2001 year model this engine did not use a manifold runner in a conventional way. The code means on your model, that a plastic part on a runner actuator probably broke and the rod underneath is loose. There is also a repair program for your DPFE which carries a Ford Repair Program number 02m01 and its free. Ask for an OASIS test at a Dealer.

The V-8 models and in later years used a dual channel intake for each cylinder. One part is a constant velocity port and the other channel opens up above 3000RPM. If you have a V-8, get new gaskets, choke cleaner and remove the Intake to clean the runner plates. The plates can stick if they are dirty.

Obd 2 code reads p 15 18. There is no code number to relate to the problem. Do you have the answer? [ check engine light on 1999 ford taurus]

code p1518= intake manifold runner control (IMRC) malfunction (stuck open)

the intake manifold has two runners per cylinder, feeding each of the cylinder heads
the IMRC assemblies are located between the intake manifold and two air passages for each cylinder.
one air passage is always open and the other passage switches from means of a valve plate.
below 3000 rpm, this valve plate is closed to improve low speed performance.
above 3000 rpm, this valve plate opens to improve high-speed exceleration.
the valve plates are opened and closed by the IMRC deactivation by the powertrain control module
(pcm) if your car or truck is not affected by the error code, the pcm may need to be reprogrammed
so that the error does not come up again. or you can connect an obd2 scanner and reset ever y time
it comes up. good luck!

this is a common problem there are two motors on the front of the intake(same side the belt is on ) that open and close extra ports the plastic retainers that hold the linkage to the motor and the arm break causing the linkage to fall off, this turns the eng light on, the dealer sells the plastic retainers, they are called intake manifold runner linkage retainers, hope this is helpful.

Two engine codes. What is the problem and name of part to fix Codes P1537 & P1538

they are a ford specific codes they both are the same also :intake manifold runner control stuck open---the control is in the upper section of the manifold it may be stuck by sludge ,debris or carbon can try a carb spray cleaner if dont work may have to have repaired or replaced good luck
