Question about 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT

Engine fan keeps running

I noticed on occasion the engine fan runs continuously when car is off. It has caused the battery to drain. After this happened a couple of times, I took it to my mechanic, and he found a 30amp maxifuse blown. Fuse was replaced, but about 6 weeks later, same thing happened...battery dead, took to my mechanic, same fuse blown. What could cause this?

which fuse controls the coling fans?

  • Anonymous Mar 30, 2014

The cooling fans continue to run intermittently after the car has been sitting in the garage w/ the engine cold. This is ******* the battery. Please tell me if you know what causes this- does it happen to anyone else.

It's possible that the fan control relay is intermittently sticking causing the fans to run continuously. This can overheat and subsequently blow the fuse. Try replacing the relay and see if anything changes.

Hope this helps.

You can see if there is a relay with the same part number on another non crucial circuit and swap them tp test if the relay is the problem. If that is not it there are a couple of other things that may be causig the problem. 1. Your Coolant temperature switch may be bad, , see what your temp. gauge says if you have one if not then your going to have to test the temperature switch with a multi meter set on OHMs (resistance) by measuring the resistance across thr ground and center connector to see if it varies when you use a hair dryer to heat it up and let it cool down. 2. It could also be your airconditioner pressure control switch, it is set up that when ever your airconditioner is turned on it will send a signal to the fan relay to turn on the fans also to prevent the extra load from the airconditioner conpressor from overheating the engine. If this is not the case and you may want to verify if you have a single or dual fan set up one of the fans may be bad and shorted out causing the current draw and connection blowing the fuse because it gets too hot from running so long. The fuse is usually designed in circuit to the bare minimum so that if there is a problem where the fan shorts out or runs too long it will blow the resistor.

What causes fan to continue running when engine is off and the battery is drained

it could be a faulty fan relay, however some of these had a continue run time program that allowed the motor to cool off after engine shut down. it shouldn`t run longer than about 2/3 minutes.

Fan relay switch

The fan relay could be defective, especially if the fan continues to run after shutdown and drains the battery.

Am having grand cherokee limited edition 2003, 4.0 the problem is the batery keeps draining. I bought new batery but still drains.Always meet the batery dead. Please, help

If you have a loose fan/drive belt. That would cause the problem. Just tighten it up. Corroded conctions at the battery but you should have cleaned those when you bought the new battery. Have you had the Alternator checked? Perhaps loose or corroded connections at the alternator or a bad alternator. You can remove it and bring it in to a parts store. Many of them will run a check on your old one before selling you a new one. You could have left something on that drains the battery. A light somewhere or even a short causing a power drain.

When i turn off the car the fan continues to run?

Many cars have this feature. The fan will run for a few minutes at a time until the coolant in the radiator drops below a certain temperature. Most vehicles with this feature will have a warning label on the radiator shroud indicating that the fan may start without warning when the engine or radiator is still hot. The only time you would need to be concerned would be if the fan continues to run without turning itself off, and causing the battery to be drained.

It is normal for your fan to continue to run for approximately 10mins AFTER shut off your engine. If it run's for longer than that or it drain's your battery, then you have a problem.

Electric fans runs after car is shut off, drains battery

Having the fan run on for a bit after the engine has stopped is not abnormal in itself, but 20 minutes sounds excessive.

If the fan does eventually shut off, I'd consider changing the thermoswitch (this is a sensor screwed into the radiator somewhere near the bottom, with a pair of wires connected to it - to change it, you'll need to drain the cooling system).

If the fan stays on continuously until the battery is completely flat, see what happens when you unplug the wires from the thermoswitch. If this stops the fan, you need to replace the thermoswitch. If it doesn't, then you need to examine the wiring associated with the switch and the fan, looking for damaged insulation.
